I'm in the process of building a new p.c. as my old one just doesn't do the trick anymore..and will be raped for spares.
Can I use my (legal) XP install disc for the new p.c.? I have the codes and everything.
I've read you can only register Windows once, but surely what I will do is just the same as a normal reinstall - just on a different machine?
I don't want to buy Vista yet and shops don't sell XP anymore.
Info appreciated, thanks

You can use it as long as it's a retail copy and not an OEM one (because then it's tied to your current PC.)
Prepare everything before. It will take much, much less.
Read and you'll understand.
Get this program:
Bart's Preinstalled Environment (BartPE) bootable live windows CD/DVD < Google for
and WinSP3
Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=5B33B5A8-5E76-401F-BE08-1E1555D4F3D4&displaylang=en)
and you speed up a lot.

Tusend tak, MegaSvensk - I'm really not sure about my XP disc. My old p.c. was built by someone who is unfortunately no longer here to ask. :(
Just HOW can a disc be tied to a p.c.? Are there certain codes built into the c.d.?
And to algi - thanks for the Bart info, and I'll go there, if my disc wont be accepted! :)

You could keep a copy of your wpa.dbl file. This file can be found in your \windows\system32 folder. After reinstallation replace the wpa.dbl back into the \windows\system32 directory and forget about reactivation.

There is a way to reterieve your current XP key.
That is all you need to use when you re-image your machine.
I will post the software shortly....let me settle to work.

Veeeeery interesting! Thanks.
There is a...magical bean which comes in a sort of jelly:D
Google for Magical Jelly Bean ;)
There you go for the download SourceForge.net: Downloading ... (http://sourceforge.net/project/downloading.php?groupname=keyfinder&filename=keyfinder.2.0.1.zip&use_mirror=osdn) 7
main site is here Magical Jelly Bean Software - Magical Jelly Bean Keyfinder v2.0.1 (http://magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/)
Once you find what your Key is, you pretty much can reinstall XP.
If you have one of those old machines, There is a terrific slim version of XP out there -TinyXP rev9 that gives you the option to reinstall with the most minimal features.
I once kept XP running at 64MB RAM on an old desktop with it. If you need this just use thepiratebay, or Rapidshare...
edit - TinyXP is TinyXP Rev09 - eXPerience (download torrent) - TPB (http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4206516/TinyXP_Rev09_-_eXPerience)
