Scottish cycling star Chris Hoy beats Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington to win the 2008 BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
Hoy's remarkable achievement in collecting three sprint titles in China made him Britain's most successful Olympian in a century, but the Scot was only third-favourite to win on Sunday night. He also had to overcome competition from his own team-mates in Britain's hugely successful cycling team including fellow gold-medallists Bradley Wiggins, Rebecca Romero and Nicole Cooke.
Hoy's achievement was not lost on the public who vote for the award winner however and he was a hugely popular choice among the 9,000 spectators in the Echo Arena in Liverpool.
Assisted by a concerted campaign in Scotland to have his feats recognised Hoy defeated Hamilton, who was runner-up for the second successive year despite becoming the youngest ever Formula One world champion, and double Olympic swimming gold medallist Adlington, the favourite, was third.
Hoy won his three gold medals in four days in Beijing to add to the silver medal won at the Sydney Olympics and the gold secured in the kilometre time-trial in Athens. He becomes only the second cyclist to win the award in its 54 year history, following Tommy Simpson's victory in 1965, after wining the team sprint, keirin and individual sprint.
Hoys' achievement capped a hugely successful night for British Cycling whose achievements in underpinning Team GB's record-breaking performance in Beijing was recognised.

Mark Cavendish winning 4 stages on the tour de france is a better achievement than Hoy winning the three golds.
Cavendish earned his victories against the worlds best cyclists and on the biggest stage in his sport
Good luck to him though - he worked hard and had spectacular results.

I have to disagree:(, yes I am scottish but hamilton was given equal coverage to Hoy. The public didnt pick the list which we could pick from. We just had to vote who we wanted. Strictly Come Dancing from Saturday night does look as if it is a scandal. This does not.
^As I mentioned above, well done hoy, you get a trophie and some bbc coverage, but hamilton is the 'real' winner, if you know what I mean $$$

Lets just say it would be like England winning the world cup and John Terry (as captain) would automatically win sports personality, seeing the achievement doesnt happen very often, but then again we can only dream of things like that :(

Any Hoy doubters think about it, your all saying riding a bike is easy, well try going on a surface used in the Olympics, which is already on a slope, going at such speeds and not getting tired. F1 is very difficult, I know that, but whoever doubts the difficulty of cycling get of your ass, go to a velodrome and try it for yourself, then come back here and tell everyone how you fell of the bike, hurt yourself and need mummy to patch it up.
Edit: BTW Cycling is not harmful to the environment, F1 pumps out so many greenhouse gases and aid climate change :D

Hoy's achievements are admirable but I still stand by my original thought.
If Scotland won the world cup and the Olympic football title in the same year (i know it's not possible) the World cup would be a far greater achievement.
Cavendish's 4 stage wins on le tour was a phenomenal achievement, beating the best cyclists in the world four times on the biggest stage.
The fact that Cavendish wouldn't quit le tour early to concentrate on the Olympics speaks volumes.

Well if thats the case then why didn't Ronaldo win it the previous season, when he was clearly a better footballer then kaka was and scored 31 premiership goals and 58 goals the whole year, 12 more than last season.
Its obvious, kaka won the ballon d'or because he won the champions league, ronaldo won the ballon d'or because he won the champions league, so lets say barca had won the champions league, I bet you my bottom dollar, that messi would of won the ballon d'or although ronaldo scored plenty more goals, right.
