Not exactly clever.

On the other hand, no rugby league player has ever been banned for drug use have they ? (David Allen, Gareth Price, Craig Richards, Troy Sharpe and to an extent Andrew Johns - and thats just off the top of my head. The only other union player to get done has been De Villiers but he got off).

People in glass houses, etc., etc.

This wasnt a union v league thing. Just look for views on this high profile star.

Seems it was a quite a known thing in the bath area.

Where did you get that from ?

Knocking pensioners over while driving might be a past time there but to accuse them of having a drug culture is entirely different.

Don't really know what the fuss is about anyway. He didn't take performance enhancing drugs so what he does in his own time is up to him. He should get a ban but nothing like the 2 years he'll prbably get. 3 months would be about right.

I'd be much more disgusted at what Davy Tweed is alleged to have done (and been charged with) if it turns out to be true.

He shud be disciplined by uk police not rfu coz if somebody is caught drink driving they're disciplined by police not rfu...

True.

Whether you agree or don't agree with what he did, its more a police matter than a RFU / WADA matter. Let the rozzers go after him if they want.

Dick Pound is right a lot of the time but can't help thinking he is wrong on non performance enhancing drugs that are on the banned list (if they don't enhance your performance, then why are they on the list ???).

Again its one of those situations where when someone half famous does something against the law and its blown out of all proportion. think of how many people are charged of this weekly that u never hear about

and tbh its more a problem through out the uk, not just sportsmen. yes sportsmen are more stupid as they get drug tested through they career, but people from all walks of life do recreational drugs

"and to an extent" implies that he was caught/failed a drugs test by a rugby league committee and given a slapped hand/fine

The 'extent' refers to the ARL who refused to give him a new contract because, as they admitted themselves, they knew about his drug taking.

If he hasn't got a contract, he dosen't play which is in effect a ban seeing as he hadn't retired. The fact he has admitted himself that he took drugs while he was playing only adds to the fact that the ARL were gutless wonders.

it was the ARU not the ARL who claimed they knew about his drug use (a claim that was only made after he admitted the problem)

And no doubt the ARL knew nothing about it at all and would have come down on him like a ton of bricks if they did !!!

Righty-o !!!

Johns probably isn't a good example though because he is/was a complete basketcase. Nice to see though that for him, it was a problem while listening and reading what has been said about the Bath Yarpie, he is the devil personified who should be hung, drawn and quartered.

This little gem from the Mail (I know, I know but their horse racing tipster is quite good) was one that caught my eye, more for the fact that the commenter lives in Canada -

As far as Im concerned he should recieve a 2 year ban and he should also be banned from ever playing for the England team again! Why do these people think they can do this and just carry on representing their country?

Hopefully she will feel the same about the checkout girl down her local shop if she is ever caught taking Columbian marching powder.

maybe the ARL did hear of rumors, but with out catching him they isn't a lot they could do.

as for matt (well both of them & others) i can't really see what harm would be done if the governing bodies kept it quiet and gave help to the players (e.g. put them in a rehab program). rather then throwing the book at them, yes ban the people using drugs to get an unfair advantage, but the recreational drugs users should be helped through the problem

The thing with andrew johns was that he knew the system he would take a pill after a game on a night out and would be out of his system within the next few days. If it wasnt for him getting pulled at kings cross i doubt that his e habit would have come out.

As for steven it's good that he has come out in public and is already in counciling for his habit.

Know you like your facts so here is one.

In England, the Rugby Football Union, has conducted 1700 in and out of competition tests on rugby players across all levels since adopting the WADA code in the 2004-5 season.

In those four-and-a-half seasons there have been 14 positive tests.

But isn't the point that the WADA banned list is a joke ?

If it dosen't enhance your performance why ban it ? Ok, the drug may well be illegal in the eyes of the law but thats a criminal matter (if it is ever persued as most, if not all, prosecutions are for possession and not for actually taking).

If the law don't come after someone I'm not sure governing bodies should be able to. If I go on a coke binge this weekend then I doubt I'd get sacked on Monday or get banned from my job for two years.

As for helping them ? They earn enough money for doing something they are good at to pay for a stay in the Priory themselves.

If thats what they actaully want.

What does that prove ?

It's a load of shit in fairness (as is the site it comes from - Sport UK or something like that) as it (usually) never names the non enhancing drug offenders.

1700 tests is basically ONE test a day. Who is actually doing the tests ? Some bloke on a bike ???

I'm sure he would have been caught because he was a mentalist.

I hope Bath and/or the RFU aren't funding that.

The drugs he took me not have stimulated his athletic performance but I still believe these kind of sporters should set an example for the outer world and you donīt do that by using drugs. So by an athic way I belive itīs fair for him to be banned.

The same applied with cyclist Tom Boonen. I think he used Cocaine which rather decreases his performance than increase it. Still he also got banned.

RL turn now with Hock the clown taking a dabble in the white stuff.

At least I wont have to watch him trying to play rugby now. God knows how he plays for England let alone Wigan.
