Changes this year
A number of changes to both the Sporting and Technical Regulations have been made by the FIA for the 2009 Formula One season. In the case of the Sporting Regulations, the primary aims are increased reliability and further cost reductions. In the case of the technical changes, there are three main objectives - reducing the role of aerodynamics in the cars’ performance; making overtaking easier; and keeping lap times in check.
Tyres
After 10 seasons on grooved tyres, Formula One racing returns to slicks in 2009, as part of moves to increase the emphasis on mechanical rather than aerodynamic grip. With no grooves, grip will increase by around 20 percent, bringing a significant performance gain. However, that gain will be offset by the vastly reduced downforce levels of the revised aerodynamic regulations (see below). The overall effect should be reduced performance through high-speed corners.
Drivers will still have the choice of two dry tyre compounds and will still have to use both compounds during a race. As before, suppliers Bridgestone will select the two compounds for each race from their four-compound range - super-soft, soft, medium and hard. However, unlike in 2008, they will not select two consecutive compounds, so the difference between ‘harder’ and ‘softer’ at any given race will be far greater. A green band on the sidewall will distinguish the softer compound.
Standard wet-weather tyres will now officially be known as 'intermediates', and extreme wet-weather tyres will be referred to simply as 'wets'. The latter will feature a green central groove.
Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS)
From 2009 teams have the option of employing a KERS to boost their car’s performance. As its name implies, a KERS recovers the (normally wasted) kinetic energy generated by the car’s braking process. This energy is stored using a mechanical flywheel or an electrical battery and then made available to the driver, in set amounts per lap, via a ‘boost button’ on the steering wheel. Under the current regulations the power gain equates to around 80 horsepower, available for just under seven seconds per lap. This could be worth several tenths of a second in terms of lap time, but the weight and packaging of the system - and its impact on the car’s weight distribution - also have to be taken into account.
Engines
In a move designed to boost reliability still further, rev limits will be cut from 19,000 to 18,000 rpm. Drivers will be limited to eight engines per season, with each team allowed an additional four engines for testing. Once a driver has used up his eight-engine allocation, any engine change will incur a 10-place grid penalty (or a move to the back of the grid if made after qualifying) for the event at which the change is made. Just one team - Renault - has been allowed to make performance modifications to their engine for 2009 in order to help equalise power outputs.
Aerodynamics
Along with slick tyres, this is the biggest area of change for 2009. Downforce will be dramatically reduced and the cars’ bodywork will appear much cleaner, thanks to new dimensional regulations that effectively outlaw extraneous items such as barge boards, winglets, turning vanes and chimneys on most areas of the car.
As well as reducing overall aero performance, the revisions are also designed to increase overtaking by making the car less susceptible to turbulence when closely following another driver. The most obvious changes are to the front and rear wings.
The front wing becomes lower (75mm from 150mm) and wider (up from 1400 to 1800mm - the same width as the car) with driver-adjustable flaps. Drivers will be allowed to make two wing adjustments per lap, altering the wing angle over a six-degree range.
The rear wing becomes taller (up 150mm to bring it level with the top of the engine cover) and narrower (750mm from 1000mm).
Also at the back of the car, the diffuser has been moved rearwards, its leading edge now level with (rather than ahead of) the rear-wheel axle line. In addition, the diffuser has been made longer and higher, all changes that will reduce its ability to generate downforce.
Testing
From 2009 onwards testing is not allowed during the race season (from the week prior to the first Grand Prix until December 31) and is limited to 15,000 kilometres.
Safety car
The pit lane will now remain open throughout any safety-car period, allowing drivers to refuel without penalty. However, to ensure that drivers are not tempted to speed back to the pit lane, a new software system which employs GPS and the cars’ standard ECU has been introduced. When the safety car is deployed, each driver is given a minimum ‘back to pit’ time based on his position on track. If he arrives in the pit lane before that time he will be penalised.
Pre-race weights
After qualifying, the FIA will publish the weight at which all cars are expected to start the race, giving spectators an accurate gauge of what fuel load each driver is carrying.

Im glad they scrapped the new scoring system until next season (Championship decided by number of wins) the amount of 2nd drivers that would be used as dummies
Anyway hopefully Hamilton can do the double, although, Mclaren havent been too strong in pre season

thanks ben for this nice thread.
im a big formula 1 fan but not a schumi fan as you maybe thought ;)
the new scoring system is better than the last but i had prefered only 2 points more for a win. 12 for the 1st and 8 for the 2nd! and with this scoring system i feel back to the good old times. senna, prost, lauda, piquet and all the other great stars! i also like the new tyres. more speed in the corner will be always fun :)
and the kers system? well maybe this can make the difference.
the brawn gp team looks great in the pre season and maybe them and red bull with vettel, who is an exellent driver, go ahead first :D
i hope for a great year of motorsports thats for sure.

I'm glad the new points system is not yet in place. I think it quit ridiculous as some people forget how difficult it is to earn steady results. What I mean is that it's more difficult to end up on the podium each race and in this matter securing the championship than winning the most races. The new system would completely ignore it.
It's hard to say which team will be the best this year. I think Mclaren kinda plays a hide and seek game and I expect them to be at the front in Melbourn. Interesting will be how teams like Renault and BMW have developed them self.

on the other hand the scoring system makes the races more exiting, hopefully.
sure the decision wasnt made for safety reasons but to get more viewers back to the television and let this boring end of a race go away...
i think we should give this type of scoring thing a chance and judge maybe after some races or in the middle of the season if it was worth it to change the scoring system...
and i dont think mclaren is bluffing by the way...
Finally F1. I'm looking forward to watch first training. Wanna see that Brawn surprise.

In a year or two there should be alot more competition from other teams, I think BMW will be up there with Ferrari & Mclaren for sure along with Renault who were pretty quick in testing. Heck the way Mclaren have been I think they might even slip behind them :(

its only a money bui$ne$$.

You're right, but not only rain: 1989 Mansell overtaking, 1990 Boutsen vs Senna, 1997 Damon Hill fantastic race, 1998 Schumacher 3 pit stop victory, 2006 Button's victory, 2008 Heikki's victory :))
Tracks...I love old or natural autodromes, not that Tilkedroms. Is he "the only" engineer who can build F1 tracks? I think no, but he is Bernie's man :D
I love to see Indy, Montreal, Magny or Paul Ricard, Imola, Brands Hatch, Silverstone... they are classic tracks, but there are no money for Bernie from these grand prix.

Williams driver Nico Rosberg clocked the fastest laps of both practice sessions as the new Formula 1 season burst into life in Melbourne. Toyota, Brawn GP and Williams - who all fought off a Thursday protest about the legality of their cars - shone the brightest on an intriguing afternoon.
England's Lewis Hamilton, the world champion, struggled in his McLaren to finish 16th then 18th.
Red Bull put in a strong second session while Ferrari had a mixed day.
Ahead of the richly-anticipated opening action of the 2009 season, motorsport's governing body, the FIA, had rejected a protest made by Ferrari, Red Bull and Renault about the legality of a key part at the back of the cars used by Williams, Brawn GP and Toyota.
It had been claimed their rear diffusers do not conform to new F1 regulations, but stewards rejected the complaint.
And it was those cars that were fastest around Melbourne's Albert Park street circuit, with the traditionally more successful teams suffering.
In the first session, Rosberg came through to take the fastest time - one minute 26.687 seconds - from Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen on his last lap of 19, while team-mate Kazuki Nakajima finished second.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/shared/img/o.gif
The German ran even quicker in the second session, clocking 1:26.053, while Japan's Nakajima finished up seventh.
New team Brawn GP also backed up their impressive performance in testing with a strong showing.
The former Honda team led by owner Ross Brawn were tipped as pre-race favourites and, on this early showing, there is every indication that may be justified.
Veteran Rubens Barrichello, at 37 the oldest driver on the grid, finished fourth and second in the respective sessions with a fastest time of 1:26.157.
England's Jenson Button - widely identified as the pre-race favourite by bookies - finished sixth and fifth with a fastest time of 1:26.374.
Though little can be read into practice times - teams merely use these sessions to determine their qualifying and race tactics - Toyota will also be heartened by their performance.
Drivers Jarno Trulli and Timo Glock, both running on the softer of the two tyre types available, led for much of the second session and eventually finished third and sixth respectively.
Also on the seemingly more responsive softer tyres, Raikkonen led for most of the first session but eventually finished third for the constructor's champions.
In the second session, he finished 11th with Ferrari team-mate Felipe Massa one place ahead.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45606000/jpg/_45606850_hamiltonanddennis.jpg Hamilton and team principal Ron Dennis ponder McLaren's showing
McLaren were slow throughout, which was largely expected given the problems they had experienced in pre-season testing.
Heikki Kovalainen finished fifth in the first session but team-mate Hamilton was well off the pace and both were in the last four places in the second session.
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso failed to shine in his Renault, finishing 10th in the first session and 12th in the second, while BMW Sauber had troubles with their car and were not as quick as anticipated after strong test showings leading up to Melbourne.
Red Bull suffered in the first session, with drivers Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel managing just 11 laps between them.
But Webber hit back to finish fourth in the second session with a time of 1:26.370, though Vettel again span out.
The third and final practice session is on Saturday at 0255 GMT.

Mcclaren really looks out of pace. I suspect them to do slightly better tomorrow but no pole contenders.
The fuzz about the illegality of the Brawn car is based on this:

You see just underneath the rear light a bult in a teardrop shape.
http://images.gpupdate.net/large/120569.jpg
The Ferrari diffuser is straight with no special features.
The problem is that the regulations don't say it's forbidden but also not that it's allowed. I can imagine this diffuser could give far more downforce:
BTW: the downforce reduction has't let to a decrease in speed as today's time was already half a second faster as last years pole time.

unfortunaly he couldnt show his talent in the ferrari because he always must led pass michael for the win or better result. you know that schumacher was the reason that a rule was fixed who dont allow to led the team mate pass to get more points. in germany we called it "stallregie". i dont know the englisch word for it.
i hope rubens can show his talent this year and say in a good way goodbye to the formula one ;)

when ferrari and renault dont agree and go to law you know they are jealous that they dont have the idea. thats why brawn is called the "super brain" - he regornized this not really cleared rule of the this and used in a great way!
i dont think its wrong what they did. and brawn gp and red bull would be in front at the beginning of the season while using "two" diffusors :)
and whats bad about it? nothing! :D
but its annoying that the season starts as it ends - with drama, a lot of complaining and whining and no focus on the motorsport as it should be.
i have watched the two first free practices as well and have to say the cars look great :D i laugh my ass off as i saw the red bull or ferrari with this tiny wings :D
this could be a great great season! lets hope the disput ends fast and we all can focus on the motorsport!

they all began almost at zero. i really think brawn gp can make such improvments.
i mean look, its not only brawn gp improving but let ferrari and mclaren lost the connection to the top...
i think you can see that they all have to fight with the same preoblems and some do it great (brawn, red bull) and some dont (force india, mclaren).
but i think after a few races mclaren and ferrari are on the top again.
and i hope brawn gp wouldnt be punished. i mean its not illegal what they do. is it their fault when the fia dont worded clearly the rules?
i dont think so ;)

"unlucky... if and if..." Wasn't Kimis crash his own fault? That does not has anything to do with luck or anything else, just driver error. And Massa's whatever problem. That is not bad luck, its bad preparation and some faulty engine/gearbox/whatever parts.

Button AGAIN.. Great, well deserved.. Congrats Jenson..
Honda must feel like shit now hahaha..
And congrats Trulli.. a trooper over the years!
What time does the race actually start..? not all the blurb, but actual wheel spin start? I don't want to get up at 4am (9am in England)to find it's running at 5 (10am)
I'm assuming your clocks went forward so we are 5 hours apart again.. BBC @ 11.08 ??
BBC clock says the race is in 22 hours 36 mins.. so would suggest 10am for you.. 5am for me

the only thing is that formula one want to minimise the costs and now everyone has to upgrade it. ridicilous but thats what we are used from them.

I bet every team was already working on their own diffuser from the first time when they saw it during wintertesting. These engineers are not stupid!!!
Don't be surprised when there are already teams this weekend with a sort of "in between" version of their final diffuser.
