View Full Version : Referee From Chelsea - Barcelona Match Receives Death Threats
According to various reports in the British press, the referee from the Champions League semi-final second leg between Chelsea and Barcelona at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday has been smuggled out of England after receiving death threats.
Tom Henning Ovrebo was confronted by several Blues players, most notably Didier Drogba and Michael Ballack, following the game after the west London club were dumped out of the competition thanks to a late Andres Iniesta equaliser which sent La Blaugrana through on away goals.
Having failed to award Chelsea a penalty during the match, of which there were around three or four separate claims, the Norwegian has apparently become a target of a hate campaign from the club's supporters.
Fearing for his safety, it is said that police changed Ovrebo's hotel before finally smuggling him out of the country.
Police in the 42-year-old's home city, Oslo, have revealed that they are investigating death threats issued via the internet.
An Oslo police spokesperson said, "We are watching closely what is being posted on the internet. Anything we believe would threaten his personal safety will be taken seriously."
Meanwhile, former international referee Graham Poll has had his say on the matter.
"This morning he's being smuggled out of our country under police escort - this is a referee of a football match. That is a disgrace," Poll told Radio 4.
"When he booked in a hotel they had to change the hotel he was staying at because of the fear that maybe fans would find him.
"When you see players acting like that, fans are called fans because they are fanatics - they may feel it's time to take action themselves."

i mean to clear things up now, i dont agree to such death threats by anyone to anyone one the world. no one has the right to. but in my opinion this ref shouldnt whistle a international game ever again. he can whistle in the norway league but on the international stage he dont have to whistle any game...

It was one of the worst refereeing performances I've ever witnessed.

The Ref did have a poor game but Chelsea only have themselves to blame they had chances to win despite the fact that they weren't there to play football. I mean with 25 mins to go and a man extra they still did not play or rather played negatively.
Barca have been fantastic this season one of their finest games being the just gone El Classico and for me if the Kop aren't going to win it then they certainly deserve to.
Now we can finally settle it Messi or Ronaldo who is the best? What a grand stage it will be too, the CL Final. (IMO win or lose there is no attacking player with balance, touch and close control in the same league as Messi so whilst Stevie G may be the best all round player in the world no one comes close to Messi)
A repeat of last years final would have been an excruciating bore, heading a list of the most boring things ever closely followed by counting the grains of sand on the beach, watching paint dry, Steve Davis, the end of EPL etc etc

Ok, this was to be expected to a degree and to Hukido, you've been a bit of a sore loser in the past so give it a break :P Chelsea were robbed their place in the final, you don't deserve to be there, therefore, you don't deserve to win it.
I think the chelsea players will be punished for their actions, and while the fans wont be, I think they have had their ultimate punishment. Death threats are death threats, most of them are hollow and thin. In fact, if someone is sending a death threat after the event, doesn't that seem like almost a cry for attention. You'd think if they were that serious they'd send it before. A death threat is an ultimatum. Do this, else this will happen. So, a death threat would only realistically be taken seriously if it was sent before the game...
"if Chelsea go out, I will come and hunt you down". That should be taken a lot more seriously than a few angry fans reacting to the after events. They are upset and they are trying to basically get attention.
Remember Neil Lennon retiring from football due to death threats before the game... See what I mean, its a lot more viable than after. Whats more, what are a load of cockney bankers ( ;) ) gonna do to this guy while hes living in Norway exactly :P

yeah i visit dynamo every once in a while. but we have a new stadium now ;)
i mean dd is 25 minutes away from my home so i feel kind of affinity because i live in saxony you know ;)
the only thing which bother me the most about dynamo are the fans. they are sometimes so dumb and brainless. and the city made a lot of mistakes but hey we have a team right here this is great.
but nothing can surpass my love to dortmund :) this is my club. :cool:
but great when you have witnessed some games from us - so you know that crazy atmosphere in the stadium. atmosphere is everytime even when the results are not there...:)

Football fans should take an example of the way Rugby fans treat their refs.
Something more, I think Football needs to introduce a video ref when it comes to off side situation in combination with a goal. Every respectable sports uses it but Football thinks they are to good for that......

Drogba's fury was due to the fact he missed 2 sitters at crucial times in the 2 legs and his failure to convert his chances is the main reason why Chelsea are out. :D:D

absolutely. i dont get it too. what i also can think about is just a hawk eye decission like in tennis. every coach has one hawk eye decission :) he can use it whenever he wants. but this would be always a dream i guess. to many guys who have something to say are to old and believe and hang on with their old rules...its all about tradition and stuff.sad thing.

its normal for a midfielder who creates the game. look for other examples like diego or ribery. players who carry the ball and create plays will fouled often. its football. pass the ball or you might get fouled ;)

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson, one of the English game's more laid-back characters, at least in public, has shown his angry side today as he has condemned the wave of criticism that has been directed at the Norwegian referee after Wednesday night's controversial Champions League semi-final clash between Chelsea and Barcelona at Stamford Bridge.

"I find it quite appalling that referees should be under death threats," he told Sky Sports News, before crticising pundit Jamie Redknapp, who urged for referees only from the major footballing nations to be considered for big games.
"Do you want to go down the Jamie Redknapp route - only England, Italy and Spain count, everywhere else is no good?" Hodgson rhetorically demanded.
"There's 60 countries in Europe. Do we say to the other 57: 'Sorry pal, you're not Premier League'.
"Norway is good enough. The average crowd in Norway is 15,000 and that's in a country of four million. We can only average 25,000 in a country of 60 million people.
"What are we going to do in future? Are we going to make certain because the Premier League has loads and loads of money if you are not in England then forget all about it?"
Hodgson has managed all over the world in a varied career, including stints as national coach of Switzerland and at Italian giants Inter, as well as at Blackburn Rovers in the Premier League.
His contempt for Redknapp's views was plain as he concluded, "Are we going to say 'You're from Spain, you might be just about okay but the rest of you, Switzerland, France, Poland, Russia, Austria, Ukraine, Slovenia, Serbia, you don't count'? It's nonsense."
