Returning to the ice for the first time in five days, the Rangers will have somewhat of a new look tonight when they skate against the Buffalo Sabres at HSBC Arena.

Erik Christensen, who was acquired via waivers from the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday, will make his Rangers debut, likely centering Christopher Higgins on the left side and Ales Kotalik on the right. Ilkka Heikkinen, a 25-year-old defenseman from Finland, will make his National Hockey League debut in place of the injured Wade Redden. And rookie Chad Johnson will serve as Henrik Lundqvist’s backup in goal after being recalled from Hartford, along with Heikkinen, on Thursday.

“This is part of the process,” said Rangers head coach John Tortorella. “Some guys are going to get a chance here. Most importantly we have to find a way to win a hockey game.”

The new faces will join with more familiar ones this evening as the Rangers look to snap a three-game slide, one in which they have been outscored a combined 18-6.

“Hopefully they help to bring us some life this weekend and in future games,” said team captain Chris Drury. “New blood is good sometimes.”

None of the new players has been promised a particular role on the team. And in the case of the two call-ups from Hartford, neither Heikkinen nor Johnson has been guaranteed a specific stay with the team, either.

Christensen is the only one of the three that has NHL experience, having played with the Penguins, Thrashers, and Ducks for a total of 226 games. He skated with Higgins and Kotalik in practice on Thursday and Friday, and should open that way tonight.

Heikkinen has yet to play an NHL contest, but he brings much experience from having played professionally in Finland. A versatile two-way defenseman, Heikkinen notched career-highs in goals (11), assists (26), points (37), and penalty minutes (96) two years ago with HIFK Helsinki.

“This is like a dream come true,” the 6-foot-2, 205-pound Heikkinen said after his first practice with the team on Friday. “This is why I am here (in North America), to play in the NHL. I knew I had to start the year in the AHL, and everything went well there. I am just happy to be here with the Rangers, Original Six. It is special”

In 24 games with the Hartford Wolf Pack, Heikkinen recorded 5 goals, 11 assists, and 16 points. At the time of his recall, he was fifth among all AHL defensemen in goals and sixth in points.

“He’s a really good player, really smart player who is good with the puck,” Johnson said of Heikkinen. “He’s a guy who can do everything. He’s real solid all over. He plays a good defensive game. He can be offensively skilled, too. He’s a really balanced player. He’s done really well and deserves to be up here.”

Like Heikkinen, Johnson has earned a shot to play with the Rangers with some strong play down at Hartford so far this season. A top-10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as college hockey’s top player a year ago when he starred for Alaska-Fairbanks, Johnson was 10-6-1 in 18 appearances with the Wolf Pack this season, posting an excellent 2.10 goals against average, .926 save percentage, and three shutouts.

“He’s had a great start down there,” Tortorella said of Johnson, a Calgary native. “We don’t want to lose his development, so we can still send him down (to Hartford) to start a game or two when we have days off. We’re going to monitor that because we just don’t want him practicing. He still needs to play.”

Johnson did not expect to be recalled so early into his professional career by the Rangers. However the struggles of veteran Steve Valiquette necessitated the move so Valiquette could receive more playing time in the minor leagues to piece his game back together.

No matter the circumstances, the 6-foot-3, 200 pound Johnson is excited to be up in the NHL.

“It’s nice to get the call up, obviously,” said Johnson. “I’m excited to be here, and I just want to contribute as much as I can in practice and do what I have to do to be ready if I have to go in. It’s a good experience for me to be up here, and I’ll try and learn as
much as I can.”

As for the game this evening, the Rangers will be trying snap their losing skid against one of the league’s hottest team. The Sabres have won four in a row, and currently lead the Northeast Division with 34 points (16-7-2). Goaltender Ryan Miller has been the linchpin for the Sabres’ resurgence, posting a microscopic 1.84 goals-against average and .936 save percentage so far this season.

“It’s not going to be easy going up there,” sai Drury, who spent three seasons with Buffalo prior to coming to the Rangers. “They have a lot of offensive firepower, and Miller is one of the league’s great goalies. But we’re all trying to turn this thing around and get some wins, so hopefully that translates this weekend.”

A busy weekend continues for the Rangers on Sunday night when the Blueshirts host the Detroit Red Wings at Madison Square Garden.
