I can't imagine worse Bowl game than the Cotton Bowl... That was simply awful
It was close but very interesting! None of two teams have scored a lot! 21-7 for Ole Miss but the last two TD's were in the last few minutes.
and FOX made it watchable unlike ESPN! :D FOX is the best among the USA networks I guess.

So if Bama wins Thursday, is UF #2 or the winner of this game?it's hard to say, because florida's bowl game was such a mis-match...i would vote for the undefeated team as #2; or, the loser of the bcs bowl if it's a real tight game...
in '02, e.g., ohio st & miami went into championship game ranked 1 & 2, and came out 1 & 2, but in reverse order.:D

EDIT: actually, now that i'm looking at that list, that looks like a pretty reasonable top10 teams in the country, with maybe the exception of cincy. (however, that is said after seeing the sugar bowl...they WERE undefeated @ the end of the regular season, so i guess they deserved top10, somewhere;))

I clearly remember the days you're talking about. Way too much arguement which is obviously why we have the BCS system now. IMO this is definitely better than it was, but not the playoffs we'll eventually get to.

so, nfl style: 6 teams, top 2 seeds get byes. single-elimination tournament. fair enough...i can see it. however, do you choose the 6 by ranking? or take 6 conference champs?
since i don't think it's valid to seed a championship tourney based on arbitrary National Rankings, i'd say it would have to be a tournament of conf. champs, but then which 6 conferences get represented? it's obvious now, that tcu & boise are better than cincy, so do we shut out the big east champ or the mwc? (see what i mean, it's tricker than it sounds ;))
basically, i agree that some kind of playoff, well designed, certainly would be preferable to what we have now--namely, the bcs cartel of the BixSix conferences.
where we diverge is: i don't think what we have now (bcs) is better than the old system. i say: "maybe playoff, but definitely no bcs!"
a single elimination tourney can work, but my contention is that EVEN the old system is better than the bcs, for the single reason that your post-season game would be determined based on your body of regular season work (and, partly, tradition)--not a 'ranking' like with bcs.
ps. when painted into a playoff corner, i'd have to go w/ 8 teams, to leave room for the odd tcu/bsu-types (or even an at large for superior conference no.2's, like UF;))

maybe, but i seem to be the only one advocating that we should, at the very least, scrap the bcs in favor of the traditional, independent bowls. i don't think THAT one is very absorbed into everyone's thinking...(as older cats, you and i, ft, remember things others don't--like writing in full sentences ;))
option D isn't even included in the poll question above. :) the debate seems to always come out about 90-95% in favor of an undefined 'playoff' system, with about 5-10% that want to keep the bcs the way it is. (in the poll above, it's looking like about 77% to 15%, with a few abstentions.)
in fairness, i suspect that the reason that option D is rarely included in the discussion is because people just automatically think to themselves, "well, we tried that system and it failed--so why go back to it?"
that's a valid objection on one level. i still reject it, though. i believe that it wasn't the old *system* that failed, as much as it was that people's expectations changed over time, so that the old way wasn't sufficient anymore. basically, post-1994, we (college football fans) became obsessed with the "national" championship!
for decades the AP (sports writers') and the United Press International (coaches') and many other, smaller orginizations simply took a vote, and "bestowed" or "crowned" a 'national' champ. (they still do.) some years everyone agreed on the team, but many years they didn't... the point is, the 'national' champion was always a subjective, somewhat arbitrary award. (is it, fundamentally, any less arbitrary now?)
and everyone knew this and accepted it--we didn't judge our teams' successes based on any poll that may or may not reflect the reality of how the teams compare. we judged our teams based on W-L, conference championships, and bowl games.
yeah, it sucked for bigten fans that penn state didn't 'share' the ap/coaches votes in '94, but it doesn't take one thing away from the achievement of that team going undefeated in the big10 & beating the pac10 champ on new year's day!
but in the 90's, everyone demanded change so we could have a "true" national champ. so, in 2009, 'bama & texas will play for the friggin' dr. pepper trophy. good for them! (i do agree that they are the best 2 teams, this year ;))
as a buckeye fan, i start every new season in the bcs-era by thinking, "keep the dr. pepper trophy, and give me usc's head on a platter in the rose bowl."
and THEN, the voters can do whatever they want: "vote for the bucks, vote for texas, vote for bsu, get bent--i don't care!" give me an undefeated season capped by bludgeoning the pac10 champ, and i'm well satisfied. (a 'national' championship, awarded by some arbitrary process or vote, would simply be icing on the cake!;))
unfortunately, most fans don't think this way...we HAVE to have an "official" National Champ, or people's heads would explode ;) thus, people (generally) never step back and consider anything except a playoff to replace bcs.
ps.sorry for the length of the 'rant,' ft...i'm sitting here, just realizing that 4:20 has lasted about 2 hours now :D

That's ridiculous I know... but It has been consistantly cold here in Florida this week. It's 8pm and already at freezing where I am. Should get down to about 24 tonight. Now I know that's not cold for many of you, but trust me here in Fla.... it is. When it's 50 or lower in Miami, they freak out. Have power outages cuz everybody throws the heaters on MAX. My folks included...

but on a serious note, since this is the last game, i'll give one more shot at convincing folks ;):
with only 10-15% of fans accepting the current bcs system as a legit way to determine a "national" champ, i think it's fairly obvious that we need *something* new.
and as has been shown by many previous posts on this thread (and a thousand others, no doubt,) the act of designing a fair & adequate playoff is a bit tricky. we want to make sure we get it right this time, so we don't end up with bcs-fiasco-2. it will probably take years of discussion and negotiation between the universities, conferences, bowls, networks, and other interested parties to hash out the details.
however, we shouldn't be deterred by this fact. even if it takes 10 more years to hash out the playoff system, we have alternatives available now. the bcs cartel can be simply abolished with the stroke of pen on january 8.
since there is already a bowl infrastructure in place, we can go back to independent bowls next season and not miss a beat. (perhaps, this may even serve to get the parties to the negotiating table sooner, and with a greater sense of urgency.)
and in my humble opinion, we'd get better and more interesting match-up's (on the whole) than we do in the current system, where post-season match-up's are based on some arbitrary "ranking." am i the only one uncomfortable with basing our "national championship game" match-up largely based on a computerized "top 2?"
i say: 'with the bowl infrastructure already in place, let's burn the "bcs" right after tonight's game, and then we can take all the time we need to get the eventual playoff RIGHT!'
PS.i know the above scenario is unlikely, but we all can dream, right? ;)

That may impossible to coach and going against the instinct, but if the Tex player had just batted the Bama fake pass down instead of picking it off, Tex would have had the ball at the Bama 10 rather than the Bama 40
The interception netted Tex a loss of 30 yards or basically equalled a 30 yard-punt by Bama

it may well be 'crazy,' but it is also a fact that Division 1-A football is the only one that is a billion dollar+ industry...it's easy for D-II & D-III to reach an agreement, because the dollars involved aren't so astronomical.
with D-1A, the negotiations of developing a playoff would be more comparable to congress fighting over billion dollar 'stimulus' packages :)

well, hendrg, sorry 'bout the ducks' fortune, but it was a great game...they were just out-manned. on tv, the buckeye players looked like gigantic mutants next to the ducks. i saw the bucks make several 1-handed save tackles on oregon backs (except blount.)
still a great season for oregon, though. beat usc, win the civil war, and go to the granddaddy of 'em all? i'm sure that if offered a scenario like that in the pre-season, ducks fans woulda' been like, "yeah, right!":p

Also, with McCoy out, they had it way easier to defend, because Tex's play-calling obviously got much more conservative and thus predictable
Still, I think Mack Brown over-did the whole caution thing... I mean, the frosh QB probably can play some if he was recruited by the Longhorns
Obviously you can't push him into difficult plays, but completely avoiding him is not only eroding the confidence he needs to play in this game, but it also has made it way too easy for Bama, basically giving up 3 series or so for free so far
Looks like he will have to play the entire game, so they need to start letting him play instead of doing everything to avoid him
Richardson looks good, better than Ingram.
I think maybe the air is going out of this game with McCoy gone.

Early on, Texas had the edge
While they can't do anything about the injury, I think both the coaches and the WRs didn't exactly help their young QB
First they were too cautious - thereby not only giving up three series (you only get a total of around 10 or so in a game, so every single one counts), but also telling their QB they don't have much confidence in him
Then the WRs dropped several crucial (and catchable) passes (one for a potential TD)
Then the decision to try to force something late turned into the pick on the shovel pass

Yeah great game, two very good teams. I haven't had the chance to watch the replay yet, just got home tuesday at 3am. Get this I traveled 60 hours to get to-from LA and spent 65 hours in LA. But even with the loss it was worth it.
I think that OSU is a very good team with a nasty D-line and Pryor just had to pick this game as his coming out party, didn't he!?!

it's hard to say...there are just so many variables: maybe it's a difference in the encoders we use? or fps? or capture cards, cpu speed, etc...
personally, i've always thought my 600k *looked* better than brewcrew, but i sacrifice stability of the stream to achieve it :) i've watched a few games on brewcrew and it does rock!--perfectly smooth and stable throughout the game every time...

man, back-to-back 15-yarders can seriously derail your "national championship" hopes in a hurry! ask the '07 buckeyes against lsu: roughing the kicker, followed by a hit out-of-bounds on the next play--net result was a one quarter meltdown that was so bad, that even though they won the other 3, they lost the game!

you can look it up: from 1992-2006, no team in the nfl had a better winning pct. than cowher's steelers. he was famous for suffocating opponents in any of a variety of 2-score-lead-torture-devices, and leave your qb watching from the sideline.
it may not be pretty, but you can't argue with W's...:)

i mean, muss is decent--as far as it goes in the modern TV era--and herbie is likable enough, i suppose...but essentially like all others these days, their true job isn't as much to *call* the game, as to pitch for the network. you notice they never get confused during the ingame promos for directv, citibank, other shows on disney networks (abc/espn), etc...
but announcers on tv are constantly saying things like: "...and now, they rule it incomplete." when if they were actually paying attention, they would've seen the refs signal it right away. or another one: "we'll have to see what's going on here." when everything has meantime already happened right in front of them. they're too busy jabbering about who they like in the nascar "chase" to really be into the game like radio guys are into it (especially local radio ;))
