StreamTransport (http://www.streamtransport.com/) is a new freeware video down-loader designed for Hulu, but claims to download FLV and MP4 video from many sites. I have only tried it on Hulu but has worked well on the few videos I tried there.

It is very similar to the browser and down-loader sections of the program GetFLV and will be familiar to anyone who has used that program. . It doesn't have download limits of the trial version, Trojans of the cracked versions or $60 price of GetFLV. It doesn't have the conversion or player sections of GetFLV but there are many freeware converters available and VLC is a good freeware player.

Being new it does have bugs such as the download window disappearing unless it is moved or minimized in a certain way. There is a forum to discuss and report bugs, report download site problems and suggest features. I think this is a good program to try and I hope it will improve with time.

Current release StreamTransport V1.0.2.1700

Additional testing of this software on a site that will remain anonymous. Lets just say a very large on line retailer if that Kindle's your interest. This site has a video on demand section with episode videos.

This site's way.
Watch free short preview of episode or watch paid full episode and/or download paid full episode with DRM digital rights management.

The StreamTransport way.
Watch free short preview of episode and download free full episode, unrestricted FLV.

A new improved version of this program maybe released within a few days.

For video download I use realplayer.

For video download I use realplayer.
I have RealPlayer and have used it's downloader. It does work on sites that use basic HTTP and RTMP protocols (unencrypted).
Sites like those above and many others use RTMPE and RTMPTE (encrypted forms of RTMP) for their main content while they may still use unencrypted protocols for their commercials.

Since RealPlayer can only download unencrypted video protocols it is really not an option for downloading video from many sites, unless all you want is the commercials. StreamTransport and a few other programs like the one I compared it to in the first post, are the only way to download the video you want from sites that use encrypted video protocols.

Even YouTube which uses mostly unencrypted video protocols does have some video that companies pay to have streamed using those protcols so RealPlayer is not an option for those.

RTMPE and RTMPTE protocols are a method of sending encrypted commands from the server to the player. The video is not encrypted because it would slow the data transfer. As an example an entire video or movie is available to stream but the player may be instructed to play only the first 2 minutes using these commands. This is not a legitimate form of copy protection covered under the DMCA, like DRM would be. Adobe knows this but tries to convince streamers that even though their video is not copy protected, their method of streaming is some form of copy protection. As such Adobe has gone after the makers of video download software that break these encrypted commands even if the video is not protected. This has worked on software and companies based in the US or some other countries, but has just caused this software to be developed and hosted somewhere else.

Here is a portable of the new version 1.0.2.1700

I tried streamtransport to get the url of flash streams but it crashes all the time when I start downloading. (Not that I need to download but only than you can copy the url). What other software could I use just to get the URL? tried URLsnooper in the past but also didn't really worked.

Ok, One more thing that is very important for me is, I am looking out for a Substitute to Streamtransport which would download the video in its original form, as it is, without any loss in quality. Like for e.g a HD video should be downloaded and look the same way as it was on its URL. Which I think Streamtransport would do very well.

I used Replay Media Catcher but I think there is a lot of image and quality loss using it. A HD video is no longer HD using it. So any substitutes which would download HD Video as HD.

Although Stream Transport hasn't updated for some time, it still can help me download hulu videos. I also got the news that the developer for stream transport have also released a free video converter for Stream Transport users to convert .flv videos to various standard formats. It is VidPie.
