Down by the Brooklyn Navy Yards one day in early June, Eli and Peyton Manning traded their helmets and shoulder pads for guns and badges to star in a video shot by DirecTV's marketing department. The plot features the brothers, as well as father Archie, battling a city's underworld with spirals instead of bullets.
The short clip, which runs 2:38 and features Eli in a Fu Manchu mustache, was created as a piece of content that would attract viewers and introduce them to a new package DirecTV is running promoting its Sunday Ticket football package for this fall. On Thursday, it gained traction, bringing in enough interest for "Football Cops" to trend on Twitter.
"Our intent was to bring people in by creating a clever video that could go viral," said Jon Gieselman of DirecTV's marketing team. "It was a lot of running and gunning for one day. Not a lot of retakes."
Gieselman noted Eli may have the best takeway from the experience.
"He already knows what he's wearing for Halloween," Gieselman said.
