Did anyone see this? It was on in November, but I only got round to watching it this morning.
It used staticians employed by FIFA to compare the 1957 FA cup final to the 2007 Fa cup final.
I had always thought that todays players were less skillful and more physical, but it turns out that back then it was a less skillfull game.
Tom Finney said players like Christain Ronaldo didnt exist back then, because training was as intense. Also the ball was alot heavier and pitches were by todays standards unplayable.
It showed you the Man Utd keeper getting totally walloped by the Villa striker and the ref didnt even book the Villa guy, turned out the keeper had a broken Cheekbone, even more absurd was there were no subs, so the keeper played on- as a winger!!! :)
Back then players were encouraged to be MORE physical and tackles from behind, shoulder barges etc were allowed and not bookable.
They even showed how the Man Utd Physio helped pull the keepers jersey over his neck, to give to another player, even though the physio suspected the keeper had a broken neck!!!
Also teams played a 3-2-5 formation as standard and the traditional style of play was long ball, you would see players get the ball and just pump it straight up the pitch, no keeping possession or anything . The players also didnt says a word to the ref in anger.
Villa won the cup by 2-1. Sadly this was the Man Utd team that was wiped out a year later in Munich.
Just wondered what others thought of it?
I always thought that players of today would physically out run teams from that era, but those old teams would run rings round modern teams when on the ball, but Tom Finney and others say thats not the case and that present day teams would out play, both physically and skillfully, teams from the 50's. The main problem would be whos rules, as football then was more like rugby and most of the modern day players would be off injured by half time!
