Opening day should be one of the greatest sports days of the year,

Major League Basebal, however, seems intent on diminishing this as much as possible by having an opening series (Oakland-Seattle in Japan), an opening night (St. Louis-Miami) and an opening day (in which over half of the teams don't even play)

As usual, the fans are the ones who are never considered in these decisions. And who knows what nonsense the MLB will come up with for interleague play in 2013.

But for now...let's play BALL

Man, I was so pissed off at FOX yesterday for making me watch the Red Sox/Yankees game instead of Phil Humber's perfecto. Yeah, I get it. I'm in the NY/BOS market, they have a "rivalry" that goes back 100 years...freaking YAWN, already! Maybe if FOX & ESPN didn't shove it down our freaking throats every three seconds, I'd care, but at this point? I really couldn't care f*cking less about it.

At least they showed the bottom of the 9th, though. I wish I'd seen the whole thing, but by the time stupid FOX even mentioned he had a perfecto going it was already the 8th inning and I wasn't anywhere near a computer where I could have watched the game on someone else's stream, if there even was one. I saw a graph last night that showed the markets for both games and it's pretty damn pathetic how much coverage that Red Sox/Yankees game got by comparison. The thing is, from where he was standing - which is where he's supposed to stand - he can't see whether the firstbaseman is on the bag. They need to have umpires stand further up the line so they can see the firstbaseman's foot.

Well...the Phils are finally above .500 for the first time since opening day. Of course they had to get there by playing a bunch of other sub-par teams, but wins are wins and I'll take it :D. With the starting pitching we have, we really should be doing much better than we are but the bats haven't really shown up until the past week or so, and the bullpen's been horrible this season. Halladay winning his first game in a month tonight and Lee not having any wins this season is freaking inexcusable. Chooch is the only consistent hitter we have so far this year, and has come through in the clutch in a huge way in these past few games. The rest of the team needs to step up and contribute at the plate, period. Hopefully we can keep this winning streak going but it's going to be a tough task with the Red Sox coming to town this weekend.

Josh Hamilton has decided to pass on next month's Home Run Derby.

The Rangers slugger says he was offered the opportunity to be the captain for the American League's team. Hamilton has not been a part of the event since 2008, when he hit a record 28 homers in the first round.

"It's just not the right time," Hamilton said. "I haven't done it in the last couple years. I want to be healthy and be the best I can be for the team. I don't want to take a chance of going out and hurting anything trying to entertain folks in the (Home Run Derby). That's why I declined again."

Hey, how does one go about streaming audio (radio broadcast) of a game? I asked last year, and was told to pose this question in the "stream torrent" thread. Great job by the Pilot pitching staff. I was taken aback when a pal told me how many times a "combined" no-hitter had been tossed. I could only remember it happening once. Hi all. I'm pretty new to the forums, and appreciate all the admins, streamers, and posters contribute to the site. I definitely love me some Wiziwig.

So, anyhoo, I'm watching my sort of adopted National league team, the S.F. Giants, (with 'Big Time Timmy Jim' Pitching, on MLB FGOTD), and I have a question for you all if anyone sees this thread again before it's done that is.

Why does MLB blackout the home market if they charge so much for the season??? :mad: I would absolutely subscribe if they didn't do this just based on the quality of the stream, other features, etc.... But, alas, no, they apparently don't believe that people want to subscribe to watch games in their home market. This really chaps my arse!

I have no television, and count on this site to watch my home games (thanks Halo).

So, the question, anyone else feel this way?

I've seen a workaround using a complicated proxy server, but if they just allowed the home market I'd subscribe! But, I figure, why spend the money if I can't see my home games in real time, but would have to wait to later till it was posted on the site? Seems pretty weak. I'd appreciate all your thoughts.

The Pirates have acquired left-handed starter Wandy Rodriguez from the Astros in exchange for minor leaguers Rudy Owens, Robbie Grossman, and Colton Cain. The Astros will also pay some of the remaining $30MM owed to Rodriguez through 2014, a salary commitment which includes a 2014 option that was triggered by the trade.

Rodriguez, 33, has posted a 4.04 ERA, 7.5 K/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in a little over 1,300 career innings, all with the Astros. The Wasserman Media Group client signed a three-year, $34MM extension with Houston prior to the 2011 season.

Tom Singer of MLB.com first broke that the trade was close. Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com confirmed that it was official and added in the financial details (via Twitter), and club press releases added which players the Astros received.

The Dodgers and Red Sox are closing in on a blockbuster trade that would send Adrian Gonzalez, Carl Crawford and Josh Beckett to Los Angeles, according to a report.

Both Gonzalez and Beckett were claimed by the Dodgers on waivers Friday, making a deal more likely.

Boston could also send Nick Punto to the Dodgers, who are pulling out all the stops in an attempt to make the playoffs and win a World Series.

Rubby De La Rosa would go to the Red Sox as the centerpiece of the deal. De La Rosa made his first MLB appearance on Wednesday, 13 months after undergoing Tommy Jon Surgery.

James Loney, Ivan De Jesus and Jerry Sands would also be included.

Beckett can veto a trade to the Dodgers as a 10-and-5 player.

i think that yunel bullshit was completely overblown. obviously the most dramatic 'translation' has stuck. The team knows since theyre the only one in canada, and in canada homophobia is widely look down upon, specifically in the public eye, that they had to do something. so they did a 3 game sus and forced him to do some stupid things with LGBT communites. escobar said to the media he knows many gay people, and called them his friends. Im sure it was just to have a laugh, sort of like writing "screw you " or "up yours"

this. what a ****ing joke. glad I paid to watch a full season of baseball this year to have my team ousted in a silly one game playoff to a team that was six games worse than us all year. we may not have won the game still, and had some abysmally poor defensive plays this game but I'd rather see our luck with bases loaded and 1 out than 2 on 2 outs any day of the week especially down by 3.

One of the worst calls I have ever seen in MLB. There have been some poor calls on the bases in years past, but I have never seen in my 40+ plus years of watching baseball, an outfield umpire call the infield fly rule. The rule clearly states it must be a routine fly ball, with no extra effort involved and is to be called by an umpire asap after the ball is struck.

Fire that umpire and never let him in a ballpark again in any official capacity.

Yep, Atlanta got boned for sure on that call. Not only did the OUTFIELD ump make the infield fly rule call first (figure that one out), but then the infield ump didn't signal the same thing till the ball hit the ground.

Besides, isn't that the whole point of, I don't know, the INFIELD fly rule, that the ball is usually in, or pretty close to the infield? If a fielder is a few steps on the grass, ok, no problem, but that ball was halfway between the infield and the wall.

The whole point of the rule anyway, is so the defense can't unfairly double up the runners on base. But, as anyone can clearly see, neither the shortstop, nor left fielder would have had any chance of doubling the runners by letting the ball fall.

A BS call for sure, the umps blew it, and Atlanta got totally jobbed. Would they have come back? Who knows right? But it still sucks. Just imagine that call in, say, a game 7 of the World Series.

This wasn't just a bad call for Atlanta, it was a bad call for baseball! :mad_new:

One of the worst calls I have ever seen in MLB. There have been some poor calls on the bases in years past, but I have never seen in my 40+ plus years of watching baseball, an outfield umpire call the infield fly rule. The rule clearly states it must be a routine fly ball, with no extra effort involved and is to be called by an umpire asap after the ball is struck.

Fire that umpire and never let him in a ballpark again in any official capacity.

Completely agree FT, I have never, ever, ever seen in all my years of watching baseball an infield fly rule called that far in the outfield. This is the stuff conspiracy theories are made of. :confused_new:

I like the point made about the rule as to why it was created in the first place... to prevent easy DP,s... Now, let's say that ball was intentionally dropped, is it even close to possible that they would turn 2? No way Jose!! Just a bad call all round

So no one was bothered that David Ross hit a home run after striking out in the same at-bat, but you're outraged about the infield fly ruling? Give me a break, crybabies. Anyone who watched that game knows that the Braves were outplayed. And boo hoo that the Braves lost a play-in game to a Cardinals team that had a better run differential but won six fewer games. Don't like it? Then win your division next year, WILD CARD. Three costly errors, and people are blaming the loss on the umpires? Laughable. What is to blame for the Braves' 9-20 (.310) record in their last 29 playoff games? I guess it must be bad umpiring and bad luck, huh? Or maybe the Braves are perennial postseason punching bags because their best players throw balls into the stands in October. I'm surprised the Nationals, Giants and Reds aren't protesting that they didn't get to play the Braves.

Thanks for re-iterating that umpires in that game were just awful.
And let's face it, had that ball dropped for the legit hit that it was instead of a ump screw up job, all of you Cards fans would have been sh*** your pants there and then. Bases loaded and 1 out.
Doesn't mean that Braves would have converted it, but with that A W F U L call, they weren't even given the chance. Three errors or not, till the ball is in play, they have a chance to pull it back. After that call it was all over.

a moment of bad officiating also - once again a late call -- still no debate to it though- time was called....pitcher pitched the ball anyway....ross swung.

and as far as outplaying us in the game? barely. we lost that game ourselves from bad play way more so than you guys won it from doing anything good other than playing the baseline average. so really congrats you screwed up less than us so by default won the game. I hope you your team gets absolutely rolled in the next round.
