Rangers' Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor have been told they will never play for Scotland again.

The Scottish FA made the announcement because of a weekend drinking session after defeat by Netherlands and V-signs made on the bench against Iceland.

Rangers had earlier on Friday stripped Ferguson of the team captaincy and suspended the midfielder and goalkeeper McGregor for two weeks without pay.

Veteran defender David Weir has been named the new Rangers captain.

Ferguson and McGregor have apologised for their actions, but their futures at Rangers could also now be in doubt.

The pair had initially been dropped to the bench by Scotland manager George Burley following the early-hours drinking session at the team hotel following the 3-0 World Cup qualifying reverse in Amsterdam.

SFA chief executive Gordon Smith on Thursday backed his manager's action and suggested that the matter was now closed.

I apologise wholeheartedly for the embarrassment caused to Scotland, Rangers, both sets of supporters and my friends and family

    Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson
But the governing body's president, George Peat, demanded a further investigation in light of the gestures made by the two players while they were substitutes for Wednesday's 2-1 win over Iceland.

And, following a hectic Friday of meetings, phone calls and an apparent flood of complaints from Scotland supporters, further action has been taken by the SFA and Rangers.

"In light of the events of the past 48 hours, and following further discussions between the national team manager and the chief executive, it has been decided that Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor will no longer be considered for international selection by Scotland," said an SFA spokesman.

"This action has been taken in the best interest of the squad, the fans and the country. We are determined to qualify for the World Cup and we must ensure that nothing is allowed to distract us from achieving this goal."

McGregor and Ferguson had earlier on Friday been sent home from Rangers training and later had a meeting with Ibrox chief executive Martin Bain.

Ferguson, who was Scotland captain and has been capped 45 times, told Rangers' website: "I deeply regret what happened last weekend and the events during the last week and apologise wholeheartedly for the embarrassment caused to Scotland, Rangers, both sets of supporters and my friends and family.

"I have always considered playing for Rangers and Scotland an honour and a privilege and nothing will change that and I am bitterly disappointed by the announcement that I will not be selected for Scotland again."

McGregor, who had made his fourth international appearance in Amsterdam after deposing Sunderland's Craig Gordon, was also contrite.

"We all make mistakes in life and I am very disappointed to have let Rangers, Scotland, my family and all the fans down," he said.

"I am also desperately disappointed that I will not be selected again for Scotland at this stage in my career."

Rangers chief executive Bain said that the two players had brought the club into disrepute.

"The management of the club has taken the view that this has damaged both Rangers and Scotland and is unacceptable," he said.

Rangers lose two of their top players at a time when they are chasing Celtic in the race for the Scottish title, but manager Walter Smith said that action was needed, although the drinking session was not his main concern.

"We were unhappy about that situation, but that was something for George to act on," said Smith.

"The more disappointing aspect for us was the subsequent action on the bench on Wednesday night.

"From the club's point of view, that was not a good image to project."

Wtf is going on at rangers? why the hell are we dropping our captain and no1 goalkeeper when we are still in with a chance in at the title?? I am puzzled seems like we dont want to win the league as this could really unsettle the squad at a crucial time

In my opinion, Scotland has been making some valuable trade links with Iceland & Netherlands over the last few decades, and the SNP are looking to model an Independent Scotland on Iceland. So, although I don't think anybody cares, or is surprised, that 2 Scottish footballers went out on a all-night bender (perhaps to drown their sorrows), but waving 2 fingers into the cameras when those cameras are beaming into European homes as well, clearly got the political arse-holes out of their slime-infested holes. I could be completely wrong on the matter but I've seen worse behaviour by footballers go completely unpunished; rape, assault, drink-driving, etc, etc, etc.
When faced with certain disaster, defiance is the only answer

Ok so they made a mistake and went on a bender then they stick 2 fingers up to all but they will now not play for the national team again and maybe not even pull on the famous royal blue jersey ever again , too say this is bordering on the ridiculous is putting it gently !!!

They have been punished and humiliated for their childish behaviour , it's now done and dusted but can we forget about it?......not in a million years because it was 2 GLASGOW RANGERS F.C players and the media will have a field day with this for as long as they can !!!

Also agree with Burnzy , timing could not have been worse !!!

Zenit St Petersburg manager Dick Advocaat would turn down the opportunity to sign Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson.

Ferguson's future at Ibrox is uncertain after he was stripped of his club captaincy and suspended without pay for two weeks as a result of his recent behaviour on international duty with Scotland.

Ferguson and team-mate Allan McGregor were involved in a drinking session at the team hotel following the defeat to Holland, while they were also caught making V-signs on the substitutes' bench during last week's win over Iceland.

    Clear
Former Rangers manager Advocaat, who made Ferguson his captain during his spell in Scotland, remains an admirer of the 31-year-old but does not plan to bid for him in the summer.

The Dutchman told the Daily Record: "I was asked if I would be interested in signing Barry if he is leaving Rangers in the summer.

"My answer was clear. If I did not have a player for that position then Ferguson would have been one of my choices - but I don't need a player for that position.

"(Anatoly) Timoschuk has done an excellent job for me and is a real quality player. So, in principle, I have no need for Barry."

    Strange
Commenting on the Ferguson saga, the former Holland boss said: "I find what happened strange. But then, I believe Barry has been at the club for too long.

"It is better for him to leave Rangers and get a new motivation.

"I think he is still a great player but not for Rangers any more. Walter Smith will realise this because he is a very bright man."

    Suspension Blow For Bougherra
MADJID BOUGHERRA will miss the first SPL game after the split through suspension after being booked in last night's 2-1 win over St. Mirren.

The Algerian was on 15 disciplinary points prior this fixture but was shown a yellow card on 67 minutes for dissent after referee Eddie Smith awarded a dubious foul against him.

This took the centre-half to 18 points and he will now be unavailable for the first of five games after the split which could be against Old Firm rivals Celtic.

The news will be frustrating for boss Walter Smith who only recently welcomed Bougherra back in to his starting eleven after a spell on the treatment table with a calf injury.

Kris Boyd is also walking a suspension tightrope as he is sitting on 15 points.

The striker's name was put in the ref's notebook for what appeared to be nothing with only seconds of last night's game remaining.

Pedro Mendes is next in line, the Portuguese ace having picked up 13 points throughout this campaign and two bookings away from missing a fixture in the title run-in.

Great news that the final old-firm game of the season will take place on Saturday May 9th at 12:30pm , this means that Bougherra will be able to play as he will serve his suspension the week before.

Rangers welcome duo back to fold

Rangers team-mates have welcomed the return of Barry Ferguson and Allan McGregor as a "big bonus" after the pair were disciplined by the club.

Manager Walter Smith has stepped back from previous indications that they would never play for the club again after misbehaviour with Scotland.

The pair are poised to return to training after a two-week club ban.

And Ferguson's fellow midfielders Pedro Mendes and Steven Davis said it would boost their league and cup double bid.

Ahead of Sunday's Scottish Premier League visit to Hibernian's Easter Road, Davis remarked: "They are two quality players and, from a players' point of view, it's a big bonus to have them back.

"Hopefully they can help us out between now and the end of the season."

Ferguson and McGregor were dropped for the World Cup qualifier against Iceland after a drinking session that followed the defeat by Netherlands four days earlier.

Everybody has pulled together since everything happened

    Rangers midfielder Steven Davis
They were then disciplined by Smith for V-signs made on the Scotland bench at Hampden, with Ferguson being stripped of the club captaincy.

But the Rangers manager has softened his stance after the pair were told they would not play for their country again under the present Scotland regime.

Part of the reason appears to be Smith's anger at the way the situation was handled by the Scottish Football Association.

And Davis says that, if anything, the controversy has strengthened morale at Ibrox, with the team having beaten Falkirk, St Mirren and Motherwell in the absence of their captain Ferguson and first-choice goalkeeper.

"Everybody has pulled together since everything happened," the Northern Ireland international said.

"There have been a few different things throughout the season that have gone on and I think we have shown a good togetherness."

Mendes was looking forward to renewing his central midfield partnership with the 31-year-old Ferguson.

"Like it was before - it's a pleasure to play alongside him," Mendes said. "He's a fantastic player for Rangers. It's good to have him back.

"We have a 25 or 26-man squad. If some of them are out injured, they will be missed.

"Of course, Barry and Allan are excellent players, very good for Rangers and Scotland, very good team-mates."

Davis and Mendes spoke to the media after being named on the four-man shortlist for the PFA Scotland Player of the Year award alongside Celtic pair Scott Brown and Gary Caldwell.

"To be nominated is an extra," said Mendes, who arrived from Portsmouth in the summer.

"I was more concerned with settling quickly to a new club, a new lifestyle, new team-mates. I'm pleased the way I did it."

    Saluting The Heroes Of 1949

RANGERS can boast some fantastic teams in their long history and the class of 1948/49 can certainly lay claim to being one of the best.

They became the first Scottish team to complete the clean sweep of domestic honours and today, April 30, is the 60th anniversary of their Treble triumph.

Managed by the legendary Bill Struth, Rangers were a formidable force in the immediate post-war era. They boasted the famous Iron Curtain defence - Bobby Brown(below) , George Young, Jock Shaw, Ian McColl, Willie Woodburn and Sammy Cox - and an attacking line that featured Willie Waddell and Willie Thornton.

In a fantastic campaign, they claimed the newly introduced League Cup, the Scottish Cup and took the title on an incredible last-day shootout.

Goalkeeper Brown is one of only two survivors from this famous team - the other being Sammy Cox - and he recalls their achievements with relish.

He said: "The fact that we conceded 16 goals less than any other team was an indication of how strong we were at the back and we were also fortunate not to have any injuries.

"We were able to field our strongest team in most of the matches and that was significant.

"Of course, we had the Iron Curtain defence at that time. Woodburn was peerless. In the all the time I have been watching football I have never seen a better centre half

"Jock was a good captain, an out and out Ranger. He was forever shouting in the field. He was a first class left back and an excellent defender.

"I had every confidence in him and if I went out for a cross ball I knew that he and George Young would be behind me."

Brown played in every match that season and there was an unlikely twist which set Rangers up for the first leg of the "Triple Crown" as it was referred to in these days.

Back in 1948/49 and up until the 1970s the early stage of the League Cup was played in sections and it looked odds on that Celtic, in the same group as Rangers, would come out on top.

They had won their opening three matches, including a 3-1 win over Rangers, but then lost 4-2 to Hibs and then, incredibly, lost 6-3 at home to Clyde!

It meant that the final section game between Rangers and Celtic would decide who would go through. A crowd of 105,000 packed into Ibrox to watch the cliff-hanger. Goals from Billy Williamson and Willie Waddell gave Rangers a 2-1 win and pitted them against St Mirren in the quarter-final.

A 1-0 victory followed by a 4-1 romp over Dundee in the semi-final set Rangers up for a League Cup Final appearance against Raith Rovers in the spring.

Given that the Fifers were in the Second Division at that time, Rangers were expected to win comfortably but Brown remembers that was far from the case,

He said: "We were lucky to be drawing 0-0 at half-time because we didn't play particularly well and Raith Rovers had had a goal disallowed.

"Torry Gillick (above) scored early in the second half and that settled us down and then Willie Paton scored soon after and we were on our way to the Cup."

Rangers' path in the Scottish Cup was much more comfortable. They reached the Final with easy victories over Elgin, Motherwell, Partick and then East Fife in the semi, scoring 17 goals and conceding just one.

The Final itself proved no difficulty, Rangers seeing off Clyde 4-1. One curiosity emerged from the match. Billy Williamson, who had scored the winning goal in the previous season's replayed Final against Morton, again found the net, giving him the remarkable record of having played in only two Scottish Cup games, both of them Finals, and scoring on both occasions.

The second leg of the treble was now safely at Ibrox, but the odds on winning the Championship seemed stacked against Rangers.

The race for the title had been a titanic struggle between Rangers and Dundee. Indeed, Rangers lost 3-1 at Dens Park in the January.

Rangers produced a fantastic run of 10 straight victories towards the end of the campaign but Dundee still had the advantage going into the final day.

The Dark Blues needed a draw at Falkirk in their final match to clinch it while Rangers travelled to Coatbridge needing a win over Albion Rovers and some help from Falkirk. Incredibly they got both.

Rangers did all that they could with Willie Thornton scoring a hat-trick as they won 4-1 Albion Rovers. But the news from Brockville Park was astonishing.

Dundee had crashed 4-1. The title and the Treble belonged to Rangers. History had been made.

Rangers had been given some help from an old friend. Jerry Dawson, who had starred for them before and during the war, saved a Dundee penalty.

Brown said: "It was an incredible last day. We knew what was happening at Brockville and it definitely spurred us on.

"Willie Thornton scored three great goals for us and we won our game well."

There was a bit of decorum in these days and there were no wild celebrations. The players went for dinner to the now defunct St Enoch's Hotel in Glasgow and manager Struth made a speech.

    Changed days indeed.
