It is because it is not letting you access the file as and administrator. If you are using vista right click on the file and click on the security tab, from there give you user full control of the file and it will let you save the changes.

    Glad yours is solved muckman1!
I am sorry it did not help you, but I am sure if you look around and google stuff you will be able to solve you problem aswell, because if your file was already like that then I think you have a different problem then the one I had.

Even though you own Vista, Vista thinks that it owns you. You have to remind it who's boss. I did it like this:

Right-click on hosts, choose properties / security
    Click EDIT.
    Select Users.
In Permissions for Users: note which permissions are allowed. You're going to set it back to this later. Click the box for Allow Full control. A tick should appear in it. Press OK and now you can edit the host file.

Important: trojans and other bad things sometimes try to mess with your host file, so after you have finished editing go back to the permissions page and set the permissions back to what they were before (mine were: allow only Read & Execute and Read)

EDIT: sorry AMK87, I just saw you already answered this!
Annoyingly, when I started this thread my system worked and now it doesn't!

If you've tried all the solutions in this thread and they still don't work you could do what I've ended up doing here:
    http://www.myp2pforum.eu/tvants/3639...-solution.html
This also works for TVU and Sopcast if you have any problems with them.

    c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

which means: on the c drive, open the Windows folder, then inside that the System32 folder, then.....

Find notepad.exe, right-click on it, in options set to "run as administrator". Then use it to open the hosts file. (someone in another thread said this; I haven't tested it.) If it doesn't work see my post #24 above.

btw, how do you turn off the active user account?
Manage user accounts here: control panel / user accounts & family safety/ user accounts / manage another account. Here you can turn accounts on or off. If you've only got one account defined you can't turn it off.

Just to confirm that my workaround in post #1 has started working again. Don't know how I broke it; one of life's mysteries.

    Thank you so much guys!
I've been searching the internet for almost two hours now before I found this very helpful thread, which explaines the steps to take in a way even I can understand!

It worked it worked!!! OMG! Been trying to figure this mofo out for about a friggin half year+ now!

I followed everything to a tee, but WMP didn't work. So I copied the link in there and put it in VLC and it works now! Obviously though you still need to keep TVAnts running in the background! WOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

    THANKS!

    Thumbs up

AMK87 - thank you so much, this seemed like such a straight forward fix, but as soon as I edited the host file everything was up and running!!

I want to give a HUGE thanks to AMK87 for that tip!! Now Tvants works again.

I also want to give some tips for Vista users that aren't computer literate because I had to jump through a few hoops to modify the c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts file.

Vista is VERY anal as many of you have already figured out. Sure, the file will be displayed if you look for in in Notepad- but you can't save it. Right-clicking on Notepad and selecting "Run as administrator" will most likely get you same message that I got- "No items match your search".

I'm going to walk everyone through this step-by-step because it DOES work and I don't want to leave anyone behind just because they don't know much about computers.

Step #1- Click on the "Start" button (the Windows icon at the very bottom lefthand side of your screen)

    Step #2- Click on "Programs"

    Step #3- Click on "Accessories"

Step #4 RIGHT Click on *Notepad* and Click on "Run as administrator". (You will get a popup message from Vista- choose "Continue")

Step #5- Click "File" in Notepad and then click "Open".

Forget about using the address bar at the top. That is how I went through the process and it took forever... *sigh* (Vista won't allow you to find the "Hosts" file even if you have selected to "show hidden files"). GRRRR

Step #6- type c:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts in the "File name" box at the bottom of the window and Click on "Open"

Step #7- follow the instructions posted by AMK87- "To fix this problem, add the line “127”.0.0.1 localhost” line back in above the “::1” line, like this:

    127.0.0.1 localhost
    ::1 localhost

    "

Step #8- Click on "File" at the top of the Notepad window and Click on "Save".

Step #9- NOW tvants WILL be working!!

    Thanks again, AMK87!!!
