I tried . Soon as I mentioned streamtorrent the thread got deleted unfortunately. Maybe I should try a less mainstream linux forum, but sadly I know of none.

I never used Windows Media Player even on Windows because it's a totally crap, it's heavy software and limited with codecs. If VLC works on Sopcast, TV Ants, I wonder why isn't it working on StreamTorrent?

I'm new to Linux. I'm running Ubuntu Jaunty. While I was attemting to watch Stream Torrent as laid out in this thread I came across something better than WINE. I downloaded a Virtual machine for Ubuntu and made a small one about 6 GBs and with 256meg of ram. I put a fresh install of Windows XP SP3 on the virtual box and downloaded stream torrent with Internet Explorer and use WMP 9. If I can remmember where I found the step by step instructions I will add them here.

Found this write up and went from there. It works really well.

A few months back we let you know that open source virtualization software VirtualBox was available in the Ubuntu repositories, meaning Virtualbox is a one-click install for Ubuntu users. What that means is you can install and run pretty much any operating system in a window while using Linux.

So we decided it would be fun to try running Windows XP within Ubuntu. Because as much as we love a good open source Linux operating system, there are some Windows applications that we just need to run on a day to day basis. And rather than rebooting into Windows. Inspired by an article showing 4 virtualization applications for Ubuntu, we fired up VirtualBox OSE (open source edition) and pulled out a Windows XP install disc.

Installation was pretty quick on our virtual machine. It took just about 20 minutes to get Windows XP SP1 up and running on a system configured with 512MB of RAM and a 4GB virtual hard drive. It took a few minutes more to upgrade to SP3 RC, which we were able to download easily, because VirtualBox automatically recognized our network connection.

One thing to note is that you'll need to add your username to the vboxusers group. You can do this by clicking the System menu in Ubuntu, then finding the Users and Groups option in the Administration submenu.

Windows XP seems just about as responsive when running in VirtualBox as it does when running from a dedicated partition on the same computer. Sound was turned off by default, but that was easy to fix by tweaking the VirtualBox settings. The only real problem we have is that VirtualBox and Windows XP were unable to recognize USB devices. We tried following several sets of instructions from the Ubuntu forums to no avail.

Nice one. I was thinking about VB but couldnt test it as i doubt my eeepc could handle it. What distro did you use for it mate?

Im not sure if this can be classified as ST in Linux as we are having to install Xp in linux anyway

Might be alot of hassle for some users so that they can use one program

I'll have to agree with you here. A virtual box inside linux is not quite a linux guide, but its better than nothing.

The unfortunate part I find is that everything but the networking works correctly when running ST under wine--but even still an open source code would be much better that way the linux/mac peeps could get this to work.

I don't see why the coder wouldn't make it open source, especially since the product is not making money.

I agree that if may be a hassle. The reason I did it was I prefer Ubuntu over windows for alot of reasons (none of which I'll get into here.) I hated having to switch back and forth all the time just because there are a few programs that I can not run in Ubuntu that I need to. I have my machine set up for dual booting. With the VB I don't have to log out of Ubuntu and I was having issues trying to get ST to work inside wine so I went this route and it took a lot less time then trying to figure out how to get ST to work within WINE (for me that is). I do however want to thank you for setting up this how to with wine because I hadn't heard of it before and I do run a few of my Win programs with it now.

Yes I myself use linux on my laptop (not much on my pc unfourtunately). WINE is a good software and while linux covers most windows apps well, some I just need. I just hope that we get the source code for ST soon, as it looks like dev has stopped for it.

So before I go any further with this install this morning, has anyone got ST to show video under linux? I had it setup on Ubuntu 9.04 with Media Player installed, but was never able to get a stream going. I have switched to Mint, but I don't want to spend too much more time on this, if no one else has gotten it to work. Please let me know if you have been able to get past the video issues.

hmm... still no luck with wine.. even after build 68..

is it just me or is it choppy over vbox?

It doesn't depend on Wine version, StreamTorrent is just badly built to fit only with Windows core, that's why it is useless on linux.

Just because it does not run on linux natively does not mean it was badly built.

TV Ants neither runs natively on linux, but with Wine, it works. Many games built for Windows work on linux through Wine. MS Office also. That's why I can't say StreamTorrent creators made good job when they developped such StreamTorrent. If they aren't able to develop it correctly, they could give sources and someone other could make work StreamTorrent on linux natively or through Wine.

You need this, the latest version, from DMW's signature
Multiupload.com - upload your files to multiple file hosting sites!
Go on the MegaUpload one, type the code in, click download.
UnRar the file, and install

You can install StreamTorrent through Wine on linux but you can't run it. That's why StreamTorrent is useless on linux.

Indeed. One can run a virtual box on linux running Windows XP but that goes against the point of a linux distro IMO and can be choppy sometimes, which was my expereince.

Ive been trying to get StreamTorrent to work in Linux Mint and the nearest ive gotten to it working was using the Portable version i made from here - http://www.myp2pforum.eu/streamtorre...m-torrent.html using Wine.

Steps:

1. Download the Portable version of StreamTorrent and extract it to your desktop or where ever you like.
2. Now rename Portable StreamTorrent Build0068.exe to Portable StreamTorrent Build0068.rar.
3. Now extract this to your desktop or where ever you like.
4. You now have a Folder called Portable StreamTorrent Build0068, in side that Folder there should be StreamTorrent.exe plus another Folder called config with three files ft.dat, kn.dat and settings.ini.
5. Now i think this is where the key to getting this to work in Linux lies we need to edit the settings.ini with a text editor and change the ports and this is where i become stuck.

So if anyone has any ideas about ports please post.
