Defoe exclusive: Title pressure is to dye for

The Tottenham striker turned heads on Tuesday with a new blonde hairdo, which made him look like Simon Phoenix, Wesley Snipes' similarly-coiffed character in 1990s action movie Demolition Man.

Defoe went on to demolish West Brom with the game's only goal, and also keep the pressure on Manchester United and Manchester City at the top of the Premier League.

“I’m loving the pressure,” he said, “It's like playing tournament football for England, when everyone is pinning their hopes on you to make the breakthrough.

“It means I have to make sure my preparation is right, that my attitude is right. Because I know how much it means to so many people.

“Everyone saw the tension at our place on Tuesday. The way that the fans, my team-mates and the manager and his staff celebrated when I got that goal and I enjoy being able to make that happen.

“That result on Tuesday shows that we are well and truly in the title race. The lads showed so much character to keep going when West Brom made it so hard for us.

“City and United know we are a threat, and with every game that we keep on winning we can put pressure on them to keep winning.”

Defoe revealed his new barnet is the result of his hairdresser Daniel Johnson refusing to take no for an answer last week.

He explained: “Daniel was at my house when I suggested I wanted to dye my hair. Before I could say another word, he went into my bathroom and started getting out the products.

“I tried to backtrack but that was it. He’d already started!

"I love it though. “In training the next day, as you’d expect the lads were calling me Sisqo [after the American R&B singer] and Demolition Man.

"But then some of them, like Kyle Walker and Jake Livermore, were even saying they might try it themselves!”

Spurs host League Two side Cheltenham at the weekend in the FA Cup before playing their potentially vital Premier League game in hand - at home to Everton - next Wednesday.

Defoe, 29, said he and his team-mates are desperate to seize the moment and continue their shock title bid.

“We don’t feel negative pressure. We are enjoying it," he added.

"But at the same time we know that it may not come again in the way that it has. This is such a good opportunity for us.

"We want to take it with both hands.”

Redknapp ready to raid Rovers for wantaway duo Samba and Hoilett

Spurs are third in the Barclays Premier League and just six points behind leaders Manchester City with a game in hand.

Both players are thought to be keen to move away from Blackburn, who face a struggle against relegation in the second half of the season, and Hoilett is out of contract in the summer and has resolved not to sign a new one at Ewood Park.

Redknapp is known to admire both players, and Spurs believe that both could bolster their squad in crucial areas. Hoilett, who can play on either flank, would provide natural cover for Aaron Lennon and Gareth Bale. Both players are key members of Redknapp's team but Lennon has missed the last four Premier League matches with a hamstring problem and Bale suffered some heavy treatment from West Brom during Spurs' 1-0 win on Tuesday.

In the knowledge that Hoilett can leave Rovers for nothing in the summer, Spurs will try to sign the 21-year-old for as low a fee as possible. Blackburn value Hoilett at about £9million but Spurs would hope to sign him for about £6million given the Canadian-born player's contractual position.

The Canadian's contract expires at the end of the season and the prospect of him signing an extension is unlikely.

Like Hoilett, Samba is understood to be ready to embrace a new challenge and has moved to the top of Tottenham's list of defensive targets, because Gary Cahill, who Spurs tried to sign last summer, is still likely to join Chelsea despite the disparity between his salary expectations and the club's offer.

Despite having three-and-a-half years left on his current contract Samba, 27, is desperate to quit crisis-torn Ewood Park.

Samba earns about £55,000 a week at Blackburn and although the 27-year-old would expect a rise if he moved to White Hart Lane, he could still be accommodated within the Spurs wage system, which has a ceiling of about £70,000 per week.

With Blackburn boss Steve Kean seeking to bring in four players during January to try to improve his club's position, Spurs would also explore the possibility of a cash-plus-players deal for Hoilett and Samba.

Defenders Sebastien Bassong and Vedran Corluka are no longer central to Redknapp's plans, and neither is midfielder Steven Pienaar. Pienaar was signed from Everton only last January but has made just 14 appearances for Spurs.

The 22-year-old broke into the West Ham side in 2008 but has emerged this season as one of the club’s most important player with a string of consistent performances.

West Ham manager Sam Allardyce wants to bring Spurs defender Sebastian Bassong on loan to East London and Spurs may include the deal along with an offer for Tomkins.

Harry Redknapp’s main target was Gary Cahill, but his move to Chelsea seems to be near completion. Spurs were also interested in Blackburn defender Chris Samba, but were priced out of a move.

Tomkins is looking to push into the England national side and a move to Spurs could see him move into contention.

Spurs join Chelsea in chase to sign Juventus winger Krasic

Tottenham are ready to rival Chelsea for Juventus and Serbia winger Milos Krasic.

Chelsea hoped to sign the Serbian international, aged 27, on loan after a fall-out with Juve coach Antonio Conte.
He has made just seven appearances this season despite being one of their best players last term.
Other ITK rumours doing the rounds is that Spurs have NOT put a £15mil bid in for Samba and Hoilett. The word is if we do bid it would not be over £10mil as a starting bid! and very much doubts we would buy both players this window! Unless its too good a deal to turn down!

Spurs have been told Sandro's injury could be a long term, talking months rather than weeks but he is going to see a specialist this week so we will know more after that!

The main priority's are a CB and striker this window.

    Two signings and who knows?

    Columnist - Harry Redknapp

IF you'd told me six months ago that my Spurs side would be right in the mix for the title, I'd have laughed.

And if we could find a couple of new faces to improve us even further over the next month, then who knows where this season could take us?

I'm not about to say the Premier League is coming to Tottenham because there are still so many who could have a big say.

And it doesn't take a genius to point out that Manchester City are still red-hot favourites, while anyone ready to write off United needs their head looking at.

City have so much quality in every position — Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure would get in virtually any side in the world — and United have been there so many times before.

But we'll know better where we stand by the end of January — it could be a crucial month for us.

We've got a lot of home games but, although people will look at Everton, Wolves and Wigan and think they're three bankers, they will push us all the way.

They said the same about West Brom this week — and they put up a heck of a fight before we edged it. And, of course, on January 22 we've got a massive trip to City — and my only hope is that a few of our injuries have cleared up by then.

If anything is going to throw a spanner in the works for us, that's it, because at the moment we have only got a couple of fit central midfielders, while William Gallas is struggling too.

Young Jake Livermore has done fantastically for us and we all know how good Luka Modric is.

I've just got my fingers crossed that we don't get any more knocks because that could hurt us. It would cause big problems.

But at least being up there at this stage isn't an unknown factor to us, because over the last few years we have been around fourth or fifth at the halfway stage.

It's a sign of how tough the Premier League is that we haven't finished above Arsenal before, for all we have improved, and Chelsea, Liverpool, possibly even Newcastle, still have hopes of the top four.

The problem we have now when we look for players is that the better you get, the more difficult it is to find someone who will take you even higher.

Believe me, there aren't that many out there — but we won't fall down on that score through a lack of looking.

And although I don't like losing any games, I do feel that going out of the Europa League could definitely work in our favour.

Whether we are good enough to win the title or not, I don't know.

But if that proves beyond us, getting into the Champions League is a huge target.

We had a great run a couple of years back and, once you've had a taste of being in there with the big guns, you only want more.

We are only halfway through and it's up to us to make sure we keep that going.

If we can, then it really could be a season to remember.

Don't think I am writing off the FA Cup — far from it.

We're very much on a hiding to nothing when Cheltenham come to White Hart Lane tomorrow, and that won't be as easy as people think.

But we'd love to go on a run and I'd hope the side I put out is good enough to go through.

Harry Redknapp has denied that Tottenham are interested in Brazilian Ganso claiming he has never heard of the player, but has refused to rule out a move for either Chris Samba or Junior Hoilett.

The north Londoners have been linked with a move for the trio with reports claiming Tottenham were about to bid 15million for Santos star Ganso.

"I've never heard of him. Where does he play? What position? I don't get to Brazil too often to watch games," Redknapp said.

The former West Ham boss was however more forthcoming on the Blackburn pair.

"Theyre two very good players but at the moment we've not made any offers or approaches for them," he said.

Tottenham star Gareth Bale must expect and play through bad tackles, says manager Harry Redknapp

"The last tackle [from Simon Cox] at the end of the West Brom game, that was bad and from behind when he was running away, that was cynical," Redknapp told the Daily Mail.

"But he is so quick and can just move the ball away, people lunge in and suddenly the ball is not there and they catch him. I suppose when you are that good a player you are going to get that.

"The top players in the world – Ronaldo and Messi – who can run at people with the ball and beat people all get that.

"He has got quick feet and is maybe a little bit too quick for the people he is playing against."

Bale's team-mate, defender Younes Kaboul, added that the 22-year-old is almost impossible to stop.

"Since last season Gareth is another player," the Frenchman said. "Now all the right-backs in the league find it difficult to stop him.

"I know it is very hard to stop him. Sometimes when he gets the ball and he runs down the left, the right-back says: 'I am going to catch him or wait for him,' but he cannot.

"Then sometimes they foul from the back as you saw against West Brom. But what can you do to stop him?"

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has seemingly revealed an interest in Newcastle striker Demba Ba, after suggesting there is a release clause in his contract at St James' Park.

Ba has been in great form for Newcastle this term with 15 goals for the Magpies, following his free transfer move from West Ham United.

"Demba Ba's done great, hasn't he, everybody's looking at him suddenly," said Redknapp.

"Anybody could have had him a year ago. Full credit to Alan Pardew, he took him.

"He's done a fantastic job. What a strike-rate he's got. He's probably the most in-form striker anywhere at the moment."

"They say there's a release clause in his contract, that's what we all hear," he said.

"He's certainly done well and it will be interesting to see what happens there, but at the moment he's doing great things for Newcastle."

Redknapp is ready to sell Vedran Corluka to West Ham in a £1.5million deal - to start raising the funds he needs for signings.

Talks were taking place on Thursday night to rush the Croatian defender's move to the Championship leaders through.

Corluka is out of favour at White Hart Lane and needs convincing about the switch, but Redknapp is keen for him to go at the start of a mini clear-out.

The Spurs boss also wants to offload midfielder Nico Kranjcar, defender Sebastien Bassong - who almost went to QPR in August - and Aston Villa and Everton target Steven Pienaar.

    Harry targets cup glory

"We’re in two competitions and we’ve got to have a real go," said Harry.

"I think we’ve got as good a chance as anyone and it’s a competition we want to do well in.

"We want to make sure we get through but it won’t be easy.

"Mark Yates has done a great job at Cheltenham, they are right at the top of the division and we don’t underestimate them at all.

"We won’t be taking liberties with the game but I do need to make changes.

"That’s no disrespect to Cheltenham, but I need to play the squad. We played the same group of players over the holiday period and I need to give the other lads a game.

"The team that plays will be full of international players. We’ve got Michael Dawson, Bassong, Danny Rose, Pienaar, Kranjcar, Aaron coming back, Pavlyuchenko, dos Santos – all international players."

"Cheltenham are playing well," added Harry. "We’ve had them watched two or three times and the reports are all good. It will be a difficult game.

"If we’re not spot on, we’ll find ourselves in trouble.

"I know what can happen in these games and we have to make sure we’re up for it and ready. The lads have to have the right attitude and do the job."

The giant centre-back will make a final decision in the next 48 hours, but fears he will have to make a formal request to escape Ewood Park.

Tottenham are set to make an offer for Marseille striker Loic Remy, according to French radio station RMC.

Harry Redknapp has identified the in-form 25-year-old as the ideal attacking reinforcement for his side, and will also include fellow hitman Roman Pavlyuchenko in a cash-plus-player proposal.

Rémy primarily plays in the lead striker role, but also operates on the wings and as a second striker.

The France international has bagged nine goals in all competition for Marseille this season, and has proved the Ligue 1 club's most potent threat in front of goal.

SPURS are planning to challenge QPR for the signature of James Collins – should they miss out on No.1 target Chris Samba.

Collins, 28, would welcome a move back to London, where he spent four years with West Ham.

Aston Villa are willing to let central-defender Collins leave for offers more than £3million this month.

    ANDROS LOOKING FOR A DOUBLE

On loan winger Andros Townsend has double reason to hope Leeds United can claim an FA Cup scalp at Arsenal on Monday night.

While Townsend is desperate to play a part in what would be famous victory for Leeds, he also knows that the right result would delight the fans of his parent club Tottenham, the team he supported as a boy.

"I saw the Arsenal game when I looked at Leeds's fixtures and that was a massive thing for me," said Andros.

"I'm a Tottenham player and to play against Arsenal is special and I'll try my hardest to get one over on them. I've always been a Spurs fan so that makes it special as well.

"I don't feel any pressure about the game, I try and have fun and express myself. We could make Leeds fans and Spurs happy if we get a result so it's a win, win really.

Why Redknapp is Tottenham's biggest obstacle to title glory

Is Harry Redknapp the biggest obstacle to Tottenham becoming a top two club?

Or more precise, is the shadow of the England job about to undo all the strides made by Spurs over the last three years?

It's now time for Redknapp to step up and commit himself publicly to Spurs. He's been vocal in calling on Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, even Rafael van der Vaart, to show loyalty and stick with the club. Now he needs to do the same.

For as long as the England speculation persists, Tottenham are working with one hand tied behind their back in the transfer market.

Daniel Levy , the Spurs chairman, made it clear at their AGM last month that Redknapp wasn't tempted by the Three Lions post. Fans will be hoping he's right.

But Redknapp has continued to refuse to rule out succeeding Fabio Capello - and that can only work against Levy in the transfer market.

Redknapp has spoken about finding "that special player" who can transform the club into a title contender.

No-one can question Levy's ambition, 12 months ago he was trying for Villarreal striker Giuseppe Rossi and Athletic Bilbao's Fernando Llorente with bids of £25 million-plus. But if there are doubts about the manager's future, which top class player is going to take the gamble when there is the threat of instability at the top?

But it's not just at the senior end where the speculation can hurt Spurs. Souleymane Coulibaly chose the Londoners over Europe's biggest clubs in the summer and is pulling up trees with the club's youth and reserve teams. But what of the next superkid they're competing for?

When the question comes: will Harry be staying? What will be the answer. Any decent agent will know that a manager's departure inevitably leads to changes throughout the club - including the youth team staff. Knowing they'll be placing their young client in a stable environment will always be a big factor in the battle for the game's best kids.

Everything is tied to Redknapp. You can't blame him for eyeing off the England post. It's been his lifelong dream and at 64 probably feels it's come at the right time.

But what he and Levy have built at Spurs goes beyond the emergence of Manchester City.

The Tottenham success has not come from an injection of outside money. It's been build on pure football nous, tried and trusted methods which has kept Redknapp at the top of the managerial game for over 16 years. For all the attraction of the England job, the chance to see his approach to the game justified with Premier League or Champions League glory has to be a massive pull.

His star players have responded to his loyalty call as he wanted, now it's time for the manager to do likewise.

    Spurs hit by King blow

It was hoped that the 31-year-old, who played just nine games last season, would return at centre-back for Wednesday's huge Barclays Premier League game against the Toffees.

King pulled up in training on Friday holding his hamstring, however, and manager Harry Redknapp fears the defender has suffered a tear.

"Ledley did his hamstring on Friday," Redknapp said.

"He had a little jog and tore his hamstring, we think. He has gone for a scan. We don't have the results yet but he only went for a little easy jog and his hamstring went."

"I have not got many options," Redknapp said.

"I only have Dawson, Bassong and Kaboul. No-one else."

Dos Santos has scored just three goals in his four-year stint at the club - a time which has been punctuated by loans to Racing Santander, Galatasaray and Ipswich.

Redknapp has previously said that he thinks the Mexican's prospects have been hindered by his supposed love of the London party scene, and the Spurs boss expects him to leave White Hart Lane this month despite his exploits on Saturday.

"Gio is a boy with an amazing talent but he has to work harder if he wants to be a top player," Redknapp said.

    "You can't change some people.

"Jake Livermore played at right-back on Saturday. He has never played there before in his life but he went in there and gave me everything.

"He (Livermore) comes in every day and trains like a lunatic. He loves it, so does Michael Dawson and Danny Rose too. Most of them are the same but you will always get one or two who will get fed up.

"They think that they're not getting a chance and they want to leave and I think Gio has got a bit like that.

"He is fed up here. He probably finds that this is not the ideal place for him at this time."

"Udinese came in in the summer and offered us something like £13million for him and the president came over and spoke to him but he didn't want to go," Redknapp added.

"It was good money and Udinese are a good club. They were in the Champions League at the time."

Harry Redknapp has sparked a massive transfer scramble for Newcastle’s Demba Ba by revealing his release clause is around HALF the £10million mooted over the weekend.

Officials at St James’ Park have been desperate to keep a lid on the fact that the striker, who has netted 15 times this season, is available for the right fee.

But asked about a £10m release clause, Spurs boss Harry Redknapp said: “I think you will find it is a lot less than that.”

Asked if was as little as £7m, Redknapp added: “Even less than that.”

Ba left West Ham last summer as he had a clause in his contract saying he could quit if they were relegated.

He has blown away fears over a knee injury that prompted Stoke to pull out of a move for him last year.

Niko Kranjcar has set his sights on remaining at Tottenham for the remainder of the season, despite being uncertain of a regular first-team place.

Kranjcar said: "I still believe my future is here.

"I know the next few months I want to stay, get in shape and hopefully have a good Euro 2012.

"The club have been great with me since I came. If I don't play here I still hope to be in good shape for the Euros.

"I would hope to prove myself in the friendlies before the tournament. That's why I'm staying.

"I hope to prove that I deserve my place in the national team. The manager (Slaven Bilic) has stuck by me all the way through."

And Kranjcar has admitted that his compatriot Modric is more than happy at the North London outfit and does not expect him to leave for Chelsea at the present time.

"Luka has been fantastic," Kranjcar said. "You can see that on the pitch and he wouldn't be if he was not happy.

"Chelsea? I think that was a long time ago. I think the season kicked on from there and he's been unbelievable."

Kranjcar also believes that Spurs' championship hopes are no pipedream as they currently sit in third position in the standings.

"We have the belief in the dressing-room that we have the quality to be in the top three and chasing the top spot.

"This squad is definitely the equal of anyone's.

"We had a second-string team out against Cheltenham but still had eight internationals on the pitch. That shows the strength of the squad."

    Thumbs up

Harry Redknapp reiterated his belief that we’ve got as good a chance as any team in this year’s FA Cup.

“It's an open competition, one of the big Manchester clubs has gone out and there are still lots of good teams in it, and we're one of them,” said Harry.

“We have got a decent chance, the same as 10 or 12 other clubs who will feel they have got a chance if they are at it.

“I want to win the FA Cup, for sure. We are in it to try and win it. I'd love to go to Wembley again with Tottenham, it would be wonderful."

We have been drawn away to Watford in the fourth round of the FA Cup.

A date has yet to be confirmed for the fixture at Vicarage Road, although fourth round ties will be played over the weekend of January 28/29.

Managed by Sean Dyche, Watford are currently 18th in the Championship and beat Bradford City 4-2 at home in the third round on Saturday.

We last played the Hornets in the Carling Cup in December, 2008, winning 2-1 at Vicarage Road with goals from Roman Pavlyuchenko and Darren Bent.

William Gallas has revealed he has turned down a megabucks offer from Paris Saint-Germain.

The veteran defender says he will see out the remaining 18 months on his White Hart Lane contract, and has his sights on then making a lucrative move to the USA or Qatar.

Gallas, 34, told French TV station TF1: “I believe I can play on for another season and after that I will decide on USA or Qatar.

“The MLS was interesting before and I spoke with Titi (Thierry Henry, who plays for New York Red Bulls) but I still wasn’t sure. During this time, PSG made an offer, but I rejected it because of my family.

“But also the Premier League is more competitive. I want to carry on playing big performances until June 2013.

"This is my date to leave the Premier League and this season Spurs play wonderful football and are competing for titles.”

Marseille want a staggering £22million for striker Loic Remy.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has opened negotiations with Marseille, despite the French side's qualification for the knock-out stages of the Champions League.

Remy has been on Redknapp’s radar for 18 months and a deal looked likely until they surprisingly qualified for the last 16 of Europe’s money-spinning competition.

Spurs are offering Russia striker Roman Pavlyuchenko plus £7m for Remy - valuing their unwanted hitman at a staggering £15m.

Pavlyuchenko has been more out than in at White Hart Lane and his valuation has taken Marseille by surprise, but the fact that the clubs are talking is a healthy sign for Redknapp.

Marseille will sell former Nice forward Remy if the money is right, but they would rather have straight cash so they can recruit a replacement of their own choosing.

Harry Redknapp reports that Scott Parker remains doubtful for Wednesday night's clash against Everton.

The midfielder suffered a knee injury in the New Year's Day draw at Swansea City and hasn't featured in the matches since against West Brom and Cheltenham.

"Scott is struggling," said Harry this morning. "He's doubtful, in fact, he's very doubtful.

"We've one or two injuries. Ledley King has had a scan on his hamstring injury and it's not too bad, but he's not fit."

William Gallas and Sandro remain out with calf strains.

Tottenham have made a £7.5million offer for Blackburn defender Chris Samba.

Spurs officials have contacted Rovers, making their opening offer to set up a deal for their skipper, who is keen to leave the struggling Barclays Premier League club.

Chris Samba admits he wants to quit Blackburn

Samba told French newspaper L’Equipe that he was looking to move to a ‘more ambitious’ club.

“Recently, mentally, it was difficult,” he told L’Equipe. I tried to keep my level of performance, but I feel it is time for me to change.

“The club does not change at all. I am resigned

“(I have) always put the interests of the club before (myself).

“I invested a lot, I always tried to lead by example, but things have not gone as I had said. I hope people understand me.”

The defender has also been linked with a move to Paris Saint Germain.

“For now, there is nothing concrete,” he added. “In any case, it’s flattering.

“The club has taken a different scale, it is not the PSG a few years ago.

“There Leonardo, Ancelotti ...I’m sure they will bring great players. “

“We’ll see if the interest is confirmed or not, but it would be nice for me to go home. The most important thing is to find an ambitious club. I would like something else.”

HARRY REDKNAPP already has a plan to stop Thierry Henry — by re-signing Glenn Hoddle and Ossie Ardiles!

Henry is likely to be amongst the squad that welcomes Redknapp's Tottenham side to the Emirates on February 26.

That fixture is scheduled to be the last match of Henry's two-month loan switch before he returns to New York Red Bulls.

And Spurs boss Redknapp joked he will recall four legends of his own to deal with the threat Henry poses.

Redknapp said: "We're not sure yet but we might combat him with either Hoddle or Ardiles.

"We're ready for him...we're gonna have a look at Graham Roberts or Paul Miller to come out of retirement and kick him!"

Ossie Ardiles has heaped praise on Tottenham’s high-fliers, but insists the most important man at White Hart Lane is Harry Redknapp.

He told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast: “Harry has done an incredible job. Don’t forget, when he arrived [at the club] there was a serious threat of relegation, but that disappeared quickly.

“There is a real optimism and confidence running through the club, and that’s wonderful. Even when we’re not playing as well as we can we’re getting results.

“Modric, Bale and the rest are doing very well but the number one is Harry Redknapp.”

He added: “Harry always leaves it until the last moment and he has the knack that the player who arrives is just the player they need. It happened six months ago [with Adebayor] and it might happen again.”

Harry Redknapp reserved praise for Jake Livermore after his performance in central midfield against Everton.

Jake, who was outstanding in an unfamiliar right-back role in Saturday's 3-0 FA Cup win against Cheltenham, continually won possession and kept his passing short and simple, starting a number of attacks.

Still only 22, Jake produced a man of the match display alongside Luka Modric up against the likes of Tim Cahill and Marouane Fellaini in the central areas as we ran out deserved 2-0 winners.

"Jake was fantastic, absolutely superb and I was delighted for him," said Harry.

"As I've said many times, you couldn't get a better lad than Jake. He's a fantastic boy with a great attitude and he's a really good player.

"If you had a club full of people like that you'd have a great football club.

"When I first came to the club people said he wouldn't make it at Tottenham. Well, he's good enough to play for anyone."
