Default StreamTorrent has extremely high delay.

    Hi
StreamTorrent is a great program, and even with very fast internet speed (very fast upload and download speed) there is huge delay.
When watching live sport delay is a very annoying. Anything over 1 min terrible, and over 30 sec is very bad. And the delay on StreamTorrent is over few minutes (seen up to 4 min delay!)

Is there a way to reduce the delay to a few seconds or at least less than 1 minute?

    In a word. No.

Is it something to do with the software or the way StreamTorrent is build or is it something to do with the uploader of the channel?

All p2p has a delay because the data has to be passed up from the encoder to the swarm, and then collected and re-assembled by the peers. Nothing to do with the streamer

But really, if you are watching a game, what does it matter if there is a very small delay of 2 minutes?

Isn't it the same with SopCast? But on SopCast the delay is much less (around 1 minute) but on StreamTorrent the delay is almost 5 minutes.

If you are trying to watch on a high biotrate stream yes, because there is also a leecher problem with them...on a lower bitrate, not so much

this is because ST is a "trackerless" system, so it utilizes a larger buffer to help keep the stream stable. sopcast, on the other hand, uses a "broker" server and is thus able to better manage the peer swarm. however, this broker/tracker server is the "choke-point" that allows the authorities to shut down sop streams, while ST is immune to shutdown because there is no one single server that controls the swarm.

To be honest, I'd just like to see the game no matter a 15 min delay... but streamtorrent is a problem for me. Seems it buffers forever for no reason and watch a few minutes then lose it again...

Try a lower bitrate stream to see if that helps? The higher bitrate streams are just getting killed by leechers

So the delay depends on the main broadcaster (main seeder/source) the better connection (upload speed) the source has the less delay?

No, it is completely down to the speed with which the peers can process the data and re-assemble it in the swarm

Nothing to do with the uploader

I have 50mb fiber optics (up and down) I would have thought it would scream through the poor leechers

Your personal speed is not the issue. In P2P it is the collective performance of the peers. If there are a few viewers leeching (i.e. do not have enough bandwidth) then everyone suffers.

So the better connection the swam has the less delay? Theoretically the delay could be less than 10 sec?

well that fast connection might "scream through" if you happen to be connected directly to the streamer. but if there are 100 leechers between you and the streamer, you could have 50Gbps and it wouldn't help you.

no, the standard ST buffer is about 2 minutes. can be longer if there are lots of leechers on the swarm.

StreamTorrent should be updated so that the people with better connection/low ping etc should have priority on the getting chunks from the main source, to help out sharing the stream. No point if 90 % of the leechers are on 10/1 mbit and have priority on first tap then sharing chunks out to people with 100/100 mbit.

To do that they would need a tracker like Sopcast.......and then the Thought Police can shut it down....just like they have with Sopcast

The solution is lower bitrate streams which can be handled by many more viewers

StreamTorrent should be able to do it by itself, or the source could, no need for a central server. But I like the way StreamTorrent works, just if the delay would be improved.
There is something called Bittorrent Live it's still being tested. Maybe it will work in a similar way as StreamTorrent with less delay. It's a shame StreamTorrent is no longer updated.
