I have noticed after looking at some of the links for today`s games not many people seem to use streamtorrent to stream is there is a reason why and should i move my stream over to sopcast?

It's fine to have ST mate. We've been looking for more p2p options, and some have now started showing football via ST. It's popular for other sports, but never really been used much for footy. I think some streamers on Sopcast don't use ST because they can't have the bit rate as high, but if yours is stable with a load of viewers then should be great.

err.. not really my forte mate but sure someone will pipe up with the answer, suspect yours might be a little high from memory.

That said, I'm watching it now, and it looks great. nice and stable, decent picture quality, no stutters or image issues.

edit: showing as 409K, sitting between 94-98%

what sort of games will you cover? If you've got Swansea - Everton on saturday then I'll watch a full game on yours and let you know how it goes, and you'll be in the listings too as long as you report in the thread in plenty of time (will be available tomorrow afternoon in the football Saturday section)

Hi i can show that for you if you like i was going to set up a vote to see what the most popular game to cover if that`s allowed sadly i have no idea how to setup a vote lol.I would be able to cover most 3pm games may well be screen cap but in English decent quality and in sync,I actually have 9.5 meg upload but i didn't want to cripple my connection or limit the amount of people who can watch the coverage

no need to have a vote, as that may well end up with the winner being something with plenty of coverage. I would suggest if you have a choice to show those games with less streams, as those are the ones we need most. If you email admin (freesoccer [at] gmail.com) then he might be able to suggest the best ones.

Don't think you'll cause your self any problems with that much upload available, but my understanding is the nature of the p2p with ST is that limitations on the stream are limited by everyone's upload limit, so if the stream is much above the average upload (0.5Mb I would think) then it might struggle when you have lots of viewers who have limited upload available. Think for the viewer it also depends where you are in the 'chain'. Again, I'm not an expert with this stuff but sure someone will correct me if needed.

bert's description above of how ST works is basically correct. with 9 Mbps upload, things should be fine on your end up. where ST bumps up against the limits of practicality is on the upload side of the viewers. if too many people with low upload join, then it can degrade the stream for everyone.

if everyone watching also had 9 Mbps upload, then you could probably stream as high a bitrate as your encoder can handle. but, unfortunately, most viewers still have 1 Mbps or lower upload. as the average upload capacity continues to increase around the world, higher and higher bitrate STreams are becoming available.

In years past, 400-500k was about the max you could get away with without lots of complaints from viewers about the STream being too choppy. Nowadays, though, there are many STreams in the 650-700k range, with very few buffering problems. i've even seen 800k-1Mbps STreams that work very well. Just keep in mind that if you go this high, some viewers may experience buffering issues while others won't--as bert said, a lot of it has to do with where an individual viewer is located in the "chain." if there are several low-BW "chain-links" between the viewer and the source (i.e., you) it could impact the performance on his/her end.

In your case, I would start out at, say, 750k. if that works well with no complaints, then maybe try 800k for the next match. then move up to 850k for the next match, etc. you will hit a point where your viewers' upload capacities will no longer keep up, and the stream will be choppy/buffering for many viewers. at this point scale back just a bit, and you will have found your "sweet-spot."

I've been streaming on ST for 3 years now, and in spite of its few drawbacks, I think it is the best platform out there--for several reasons. Firstly, and most important, ST streams are completely immune (for the time being) to being shut down by the "authorities." unlike sopcast, since there is no central server that manages the p2p network in ST, there is no single point that the thought-police can go to kill the stream. Second is the fact that unlike flash, there is no limit to the number of viewers on an ST stream. as long as there aren't too many "leechers," the STream can support an infinite audience. a couple years ago, i had over 14,000 viewers for an NBA game. (in ST parlance, a "leecher" is a viewer who has less upload capacity than the bitrate of the STream.) Finally, the ST app itself is very lightweight and non-intrusive: there are no ads/scripts/chat/BS--just sports!

good luck with your new STream, and if you have any more questions, i'll be happy to help.
