    Default Internet usage limit

Hi, just a quick question! I'm in Australia and planning to stream games at the weekend, but I'm paying 5 dollars an hour on the internet to do so, and I have a usage limit of 50mb.

I'm not technically knowlegable at all, and I'm basically just wondering if watching a stream would take up a lot of this usage? Don't want to get a fine! Thanks, in advance.

Really? Dang it... How much for a match do you reckon? its like 49 dollars for 3gb of usage over here, that seems a bit ridiculous that streaming would take up so much...

Are you using a satellite phone or something like that? Your download speed might be too low anyway.

Its a wi fi dongle from Vodafone. Speed is actually decent so wouldn't be an issue. Only issue is the download limit.

    Difficult to say but if the stream is 300kbps this applies;

    This equates to:
    300/8 = 37.5 kilobytes per second.
37.5*60 = 2250 kilobytes per minute or 2.25 megabytes per minute.
    2250*60 = 135 000 kilobytes per hour or 135 megabytes per hour.

I know from experience that watching a 90 minutes game on flash uses about 0.5Gb of a users download (allowing for use of forum and changing channels when banned). Sopcast at around 1Mb stream uses around 1Gb.

Given this, i would expect you will need far far more than 50Mb. mobile operators usually are the first to can you for exceeding, or heavy bandwidth use, and also the least cost effective option. You need a fixed line connection really.. 4G might suffice if it's available but likely to bankrupt you in the process.

You need upload speeds of at least a few Mb, again you'll get peanuts on upload through a mobile network. Limits are also inadvisable, particular if you are screen capping a pay web broadcast (so your download is used up obtaining the stream source).

I would suggest shopping around if those are the prices you have, but I suspect you are only talking about mobile tariffs. Noble if you are willing to spend the money, but not value for money and unlikely to allow you to stream anything anyway.

re-reading your posts, I also suspect you mean you want to WATCH games, and not STREAM games? If that's the case you'll still struggle big time on mobile. I had one once while waiting for my fibre install, managed to watch a single flash game, then got banned from accessing video on the web for exceeding fair use rules. Expect the same if you try.

Been doing that for months now mate and no bans here from 3 mobile...

I pay £15 a month for the "all you can eat data package" but that's meant to be the catch its meant for a mobile phone not a doggle. I just top it up on my phone then take out the sim and bang it in my doggle and surf...

Some useful figures out of experience:

Streaming audio = roughly 60mb per hour
Streaming video = approx 400mb an hour
    Watching a movie = approx 700mb
Playing a video game online = 40 to 80mb an hour

Streaming media (64 kbps): 30 megs per hour
Streaming media (128 kbps): 60 megs per hour
Streaming media (256 kbps): 120 megs per hour
    - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -- - - -
Streaming media (1024 kbps): 480 megs per hour

3 must be nice. T-Mobile are not, I had a dongle, standard sim (they all are aren't they? Only the tariff attached to the account differs?) and after watching one game, i went to watch a news video and got a T-Mobile message saying I had exceeded the fair use limit and was banned for the rest of the month from watching video or anything of high bandwidth use. Also had a really irritating nanny filter that stopped me accessing half the web, even the stuff that isn't porn.

    Depends what stream you're watching.
If i'm watching a bloodzeed stream, it can be around 2gig for a game.
Flash is much less, but so is the quality.

I'd hate to be internet capped, i've done just shy of 700gig this month, infact, i use about 3gig a month on a phone.
Thank F*ck for "all you can eat" data.
